With over a decade’s experience, I have taught 3rd, 5th and 6th grades,
GATE programs, had full inclusion students, and have worked in intervention
programs for at risk students. I am a graduate of California State
University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) with my Liberal Studies B.A. and my clear
Multiple Subject CLAD credential. I am in my masters program for Curriculum
and Instruction at CSUS. I have a GATE certificate for teaching. Sutterville
has won School of the Year twice, and I have won Teacher of the Year at
County History Day competitions. I have been educated, and personally
believe, that education is accessible to all people.
We all learn differently!
Our class is built on the idea that we are a community of learners. Each
person learns in different ways. The goal is to create a learning atmosphere
that engages each person's strengths and challenges us to grow as people.
The process of learning,as well as the outcome, is central in education.
My favorite teachers growing up were the ones who challenged me to go out of
my comfort level a little bit, strive for the stars, and work hard. They
would say, "If I didn't care, I wouldn't push you." I always learned the
most from them, both about life and how to get the most from my education.
It is important to me that they get the most from their 6th grade year. And,
don't worry, I do realize they are only 10, 11 and 12- there is plenty of
fun to be had along the way!
One goal in 6th grade is to teach organization and problem solving. This
includes using planning on a calendar- monthly, weekly, and daily. It also
means how to solve problems with peers, other adults, and the world around
them.
Students are also asked to learn the skills of communication with teachers,
home, and peers in positive, effective ways since this becomes very
important in life from here on out. Sometimes the communication is pleasant
and friendly, and sometimes, students need to use words to empower
themselves or practice tolerance.
The standards set by California for the 6th grade are the driving force
behind instruction in our class. I am committed to project based instruction
and differeniation.
