Hello Parents! I was very glad to meet you all during conference time. Thank you for being so flexible with the scheduling! October was a very fun month. Hopefully you have heard about all of the great things we have done from your child. November is going to be a great month as well. We have many terrific activities planned...
Language Arts: In November we will be learning the letter names and sounds of Hh, Aa, Vv, and Cc. We will also be learning more sight words. In addition to the sight words from previous months (which were “I”, “see”, “my”, and “like”), the children will be learning the words “can”, “a” and “to”. As you see these words introduced (in the homework packet) please add them to your word ring. Remember to continue using the word rings to practice the sight words with your child regularly and putting stars and/or stickers on the cards of the words your child has already learned.
READ!!!
Please also continue to read with your child each night and record the number of minutes on the monthly Reading
Calendar. A “Book Box” letter was sent home describing what a book box is and some possible questions to ask your child while you are reading together. The kids love using the Spooky finger, so take advantage of this fun opportunity to read with your child. All students should be able to read the books we make in class because they use the sight words we have already learned and/or they are predictable texts (like the “Brown Bear, Brown Bear” book). Make sure that your child points to each word as they read (literally pick up their finger and move it from word to word instead of sweeping across the page). This helps them to differentiate between words and letters and gets them on their way to being more fluent readers! I am sure that you are as amazed as I am with the amount of things the kids have learned already! J
We are currently on a unit called “We’re A Family” in our reading program. We will hear some stories and talk about the different people in our families.
Writing: We are working on starting our sentences with a
capital, putting spaces between words, and ending a sentence with punctuation (period, exclamation mark, or question mark). Soon, we will be trying to sound out words on our own, using “kindergarten writing”. For example, they might spell the word “sandbox” as “snbx”, which is perfectly appropriate. We are trying to get them to write the sounds they hear.
Math: In November we will continue learning how to sort objects and playing the game “Monster Squeeze”. This is a fun game that teaches the children how to use the vocabulary “greater than”, “less than” and “equal to”. We made one of these in class to go home so you can play together! We are also learning teen numbers and the concepts of addition and subtraction through the use of number stories. In November, we are also practicing writing numerals, practicing patterns, measuring with non-standard objects (such as unifix cubes or paper clips), probability, counting by 10’s, and using a pan balance to weigh items.
Social Studies: During Red Ribbon Week, we discussed many important topics. We role-played saying mean things to a paper Humpty Dumpty, ripping him a little each time we made a comment. Then we apologized to him as we taped him back together. We learned that it helps to say you’re sorry, but it is very hard to completely fix the hurt that mean words can cause.
This month, the children will learn what a citizen is and what makes a good citizen. We will also talk about symbols like the American Flag, and how things have changed from long ago. We will be learning about the first Thanksgiving.
Science: We will continue to observe trees and talk about their different parts (leaves, branches, trunk, roots). We will also discuss the different colors and notice the colors in the world around us. The children’s observations of the real world should be reflected in their own drawings with the use of realistic colors.
Fine Motor Skills: This month we continue to practice using fine motor skills to color neatly, and also to cut. Your child should be able to cut on a straight line this trimester. Eventually they will need to be able to cut on a zigzag line, and then a curved line. “Fine Motor Skills” is an area on the report card, so it is important that they continue to practice. As the small muscles in their hands get stronger, they will get better and better at coloring, cutting, and printing. All three of these things are very important as your child moves up the grade levels so we are trying to instill good habits now.
Other:
- This month’s character key is CITIZENSHIP.
- Mrs. Janton’s birthday is on Tuesday, November 10th!
- Wednesday, November 11th there is no school in observance of Veteran’s Day.
- Friday, November 13th is a school-spirit day called “Decades Day”. ASB is asking students to dress in ‘80’s, ‘70’s, ‘60’s, or 50’s clothes.
- Friday, November 20th is another spirit day called “Crazy Sock Day”. Have your child wear their craziest pair of socks!
- Monday, November 23rd is our Thanksgiving Celebration. We will be making a friendship fruit salad in class.
- On November 25th-27th there will be no school for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
A Note About Homework:
Remember that when you do the Math Home Links, I would like you to write a little something about what you did, how it went, and then staple it onto the rest of the homework packet at the end of the week. Also make sure that your child does all writing in pencil and all artwork in crayon or colored pencil. Thanks!
Wish List: Here are some things that would be very useful to me, but please do not ever feel obligated:
- Different kinds of noodles to make noodle necklaces for our Thanksgiving Celebration (Rigatoni, Wagon Wheel Pasta, or any other type of pasta with a large opening will work).
