Room 21 - Mrs. Benink’s Weekly Newsletter
For the week of November 16th - 20th

Island of the Blue Dolphins - 
Please refer to the letter sent home last week for specific details.  This 
week's focus will be on chapters 16-20 although we plan to read through 
chapter 29.  We will focus on grammar, figurative language, plot development 
and summary of material read.  Vocabulary will be accumulated throughout 
the week and your child should study the words accordingly.  We will have a 
vocabulary matching test on Friday on the first 10 words on the vocabulary 
list in addition to a comprehensive test on Chapters 16-20 at the end of the 
week.  Most of the work will be completed in class however your child will be 
responsible for rereading Chapters 18-21 tonight.  I have decided to extend 
the core literature study on Island of the Blue Dolpins.  We will finish the 
book by next Tuesday; however, I plan to teach several engaging & creative 
culminating activities after we return from the Thanksgiving holiday.

Math:  We will continue to work on EDM Unit 4 - Decimals, place value, and 
converting decimals into fractions.  A study guide will go home tomorrow and 
we will test on Friday.

Science:  We plan to take a break and resume after the Thanksgiving holiday 
with electricity and magnetism.

Social Studies: Unit 2 - Early people in California; from California's 
natives to European settlers.  In addition, we will learn about how the 
Spanish changed and influenced the natives.  Vocabulary Quiz on Unit 2:  
Lessons 3-5 on Thursday.

Reminders & Upcoming Events:
Thank you for the candy (for our troops) and Manna food donations.

  NO rotations the week of Thanksgiving - November 23rd and 24th
* An informational meeting for the science fair will be held after school on 
Thursday, December 10th from 2:45 to 3:15.  Parents and students are 
encouraged to attend if their child will be participating in the fair.  Thank 
you!
