Extra Credit Opportunities

***Find either of Washington Irving's famous short stories--"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" or "Rip Van Winkle"--online and print one of them.  Read your selected story, highlighting the Romantic elements as you read.  Type a one-half page to full page analysis of the story, explaining how those Romantic characteristics help the author develop satire and his theme.
Staple the highlighted text of the story to the back of your analysis.  (15 points)***

*** Attend the TOHS Fall play, "Rumors", being performed in the PAC on November 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18.  Write a review of the play using the example of a critic's format as listed in Handouts.  You must attach your ticket stub as additional proof that you attended. (15 points)***

***Solve the following logic puzzle:
One rainy evening, five famous writers (a novelist, a short story author, a poet, a biographer, and a speech writer) were murdered in the old mansion on Raven Lane.  The murders took place in the bedroom, basement, pantry, den, and attic of the house.  No two writers were murdered in the same room or with the same weapon.  The weapons used were poison, a poker, a gun, a knife, and a shovel.  From the clues given, determine the room in which each writer was killed and the weapon used to do that person in.(5 points)***

1)   The murder with the shovel was not done in the den or the attic; neither the short story author nor the poet was killed with the shovel, nor was either killed in the den or the attic.

2)   The short story author was not murdered in the bedroom.

3)   The poker was not the murder weapon used in the attic.

4)   Neither the novelist nor the speech writer was murdered with poison, a gun or a shovel.

5)   The person murdered in the basement had just had dinner with the speech writer, the short story author, the person done in with poison, and the victim of the poker.
