Dear Parents & Students,
It was wonderful to see so many of you at our third grade math night
which focused on multiplication. Hopefully you left with some great ideas
for making the learning of the times tables easier and more fun.
We have finished our legends unit and students wrote some great Native
American legends. They had to explain why or how something from nature came
to be. We are now reading our next anthology theme which is on Incredible
Stories. The stories in this theme are filled with imagination. We just
read about a girl who had a dragon as a pet. Students then learned the
characteristics of a persuasive paragraph and had to write a paragraph
persuading us that an animal that we would not normally consider as a pet,
would make a great pet!
As soon as students have finished sharing their fabric squares with the
class, we will be sewing them into pillows. As you all know, February's book
report is a biography book. Hopefully, all students have their book and have
begun to read it. Midway through February, we will be doing portraits with
chalk of our person we are reading about. We will also work on timeline
skills. Students need to be sure they are very familiar with the life of the
person they are studying. Don't forget to put February 22nd aside for our
Living Museum - this is a not to be missed event!
We are moving along in multiplication and have introduced the relation
of multiplication to division. Most of the children are doing great on their
time tests and are building their banana splits. Be sure to continue to
drill them at home. We will probably be spending all of February on
multiplication and division facts.
We have completed our unit on Native Americans and will be starting our
next science unit, which is on The Sun, Moon and Stars. The students really
enjoy this unit and we do a lot of extended curriculum projects with it. In
the computer lab this month students will be paired up and will research a
planet and complete a powerpoint presentation.
We will continue to work on our study skills unit, focusing on test
taking skills. We met with out first grade buddies in January and completed
a Martin Luther King Jr. project with them. This month we will be learning
about President Washington and Lincoln.
We continue to be impressed by how many students are working on the
Mastery Club and Mind Expanders programs. For those students participating
in Word Masters, be sure to study your words - the test is this month!
We are in need of some batting to make our pillows. If you are able to
buy a bag or two of pillow stuffing (batting) and send it in, we would be
very appreciative - just send us an email. Thank you!
