Reading Counts at Village View
By Jodi Novy
Principal
Village View students are excited about our new reading
program called Reading Counts! Reading Counts! will be replacing
our RAH program that has been utilized in the past. It is a
program that enables our students to read books at home and then
access the computers in their classroom to take a comprehensive
test. Village View students are held accountable for
understanding what they read; a key idea in developing good
readers.
The amount of books available to take a test on is
immense. Students and parents can access the list online, making
it more convenient and eco-friendly. Also, students generate
personalized reading lists that are based on their reading
abilities and interests. They select or are assigned
books from the list and read them independently. Unique quizzes
draw from a bank of up to 30 questions which test their
comprehension skills.
Reading Counts! provides our students with immediate
feedback and celebrates student success with age-appropriate
congratulations screens. Our new program helps students build
personal responsibility toward increasing their reading
achievements by allowing them to help set quantifiable reading
goals and to track their own progress.
With our new program, which is aligned to both state and
national standards, Village View students are improving their
reading skills. They are showing excitement towards reading and
are reading many genres and topics. Reading Counts! Is a great
addition to our current program and will support our readers
across the curriculum. Village View students are feverishly
reading, reading, reading!!
