Hi Fellow Travelers.
One of the spots we will visit is the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. Here's a few facts about it you may find interesting.
The FDR Memorial
One of the newest memorials located in D.C., the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is divided into four "rooms," one for each of his terms in office. Each of the rooms has familiar quotations from FDR’s fireside chats, inaugural addresses, and other speeches, including one of his most famous sayings: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Keep reading for some fun facts about the FDR Memorial and the man who inspired it:
- The FDR Memorial is the first memorial also to be dedicated to a First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt.
- The memorial is the second memorial dedicated to FDR. The first is located behind the National Archives, and per FDR's request, is no bigger than the desk at which he worked.
- FDR was the first president to speak on television.
- FDR was one of eight presidents who died while in office.
- He was the first president to have a presidential aircraft or to fly in an airplane.
- He was the only president to be elected to four terms and was in office longer than any other president.
- He was the first president whose mother was allowed to vote for him.
- FDR’s mother forced him to wear a dress until he was five years old!
