November 23 - 25
Our NewsFlash features NEW! school and community updates and announcements. Visit the“Important Information” web page from the menu bar on the left for vital information that has been featured previously on the NewsFlash page.
Snow and Fog Delays
Tehachapi is well known for sudden changes in weather. VOCS follows the Tehachapi Unified School District for all snow delays or snow days. Also, Kern County Schools Alert Line is an excellent place to visit for the latest updates during inclement weather. However, if there is a school closure, VOCS will not be holding classes on campus. If there is a two hour delay, the first two classes will be canceled and workshops will start at 10:30. Also, if classes are already in session and the snow begins to fall then please feel free to pick up your child. If you have any questions, please contact your Resource Teacher.
New Updated Enrichment 2 Assignments Web Page!
If you have ever asked yourself or your child even one of the following questions, check out this valuable reorganized page on our website!
-What did you learn in enrichment classes today?
-What did you do in your classes?
-Do you have an assignment that needs to be completed at home?
-How do I incorporate what my child is learning in classes with what we are doing at home?
-What Internet resources can I use to further research a topic that my child is learning about in enrichment?
-What is your teacher’s name?
-What should you be bringing to class?
-My child was sick, what did he/she miss? And how can I get the missing work?
Attention Crafty Parents!
VOPACT is looking for your help with Valley Oak’s Holiday Party on December 18. If you have a great craft idea and would like to lead a craft station at this year’s party please e-mail Laura Forbes, glforbes@juno.com with your name, e-mail address, and phone number.
Parents of 8th Grade Students
The Constitution class will be offered during Enrichment Sessions 3 & 4, beginning on Friday, January 15, 2010. This class will prepare your student for the mandatory Constitution testing that Valley Oaks requires for graduation. I'd like to meet with parents only on Wednesday, January 6th, for an informational meeting. It will be held in Classroom B/C at 2:00pm. Any questions, please e-mail Margo Hayes at charlotteswebagain@yahoo.com
"Day in Court" Field trip for 6th-8th Graders!
On Friday, January 8, 2010, Valley Oaks 6th-8th grade students are invited to the Mojave Courthouse to observe actual court cases as they are brought to pre-trial. This exciting field trip is sponsored by the Tehachapi Four Seasons Optimist Club and will include an essay contest on the topic, "My Day in Court".
If you would like to attend this field trip, please e-mail Margo Hayes at charlotteswebagain@yahoo.com with your name and your 6th-8th grade student's name.
Box Top Contest
It is now the time to really start looking for ways to collect Box Tops as you shop for products you normally buy. Hundreds of your favorite brands, such as Betty Crocker, Cheerios, Chex Mix, etc., are now carrying 2 bonus Box Tops as well as the regular Box Top on each package. For more brands, as well as coupons, shopping opportunities, bonus Box Top contests, etc., go to www.btfe.com and check it out.
Our BIG contest this year will award the winning student-resource teacher team with a $25.00 Visa gift certificate each. The turn in date will be February 19th, 2010.
Contest Rules: 1. Clip and trim Box Tops care- fully. 2. Check expiration dates on all Box Tops. 3. Bundle in groups of 50 (or less) for turn-in. 4. Place in a Ziploc baggie (very important) with student name, resource teacher name, and number of Box Tops written on a card in the bag. 5) Place Box Tops in the green box in room B/C. Following these rules will ensure that your student gets the credit for the Box Tops he/she turns in!
Last year we received almost $ 200.00 from your Box Top collecting – which all went to VOPACT to be used for the wonderful “extras” they do for our students. This year our Valley Oaks Tehachapi goal is $350.00. Let’s make it happen!
Thanks for clipping!

ID Photos
Thank you to all of our students that taken their ID photos. We are still waiting for some to have their pictures taken, and we would like to finish this task up next week. These ID photos are very important as they will provide you with discounts and help us during emergency situations. Please stop by the office at your earliest convenience to say cheese. Thank you!
Flu Season
It is that time a year again when we are all trying to stay healthy. If your student is running a fever, or doesn't feel well, please keep them home. We will be encouraging hand washing, and the use of hand sanitizer, while the students are in class, but keeping them home if they are sick would be much appreciated. Also, be sure to send sweaters and jackets (labeled with your child's name!) as our weather in Tehachapi can change drastically from one day to the next. If you have any questions, or concerns, feel free to contact the front office.
K-3 Enrichment Field Trip!
The K-1 and 1-3 Wild Things! and Communities enrichment classes will be going on a field trip this Friday, 11/20. We will be meeting at the fire station at the corner of Curry and Valley Blvd at 9 am. Immediately following the fire station, we will head over to the park (weather permitting) for our "Rumpus In the Park" where we will act out Where the Wild Things Are and enjoy some play time and Storytime with Ms. Dragomanovich. Please remember to wear something warm and to bring your snack and lunch. Siblings are welcome. Looking forward to seeing you all there!
 Enrichment Update!
Enrichment session 2 has been filled with lots of learning, lots of smiles, and lots of students. Since our enrollment has increased, we have found ourselves in new territory concerning our enrichment classes. While we know we have a few holes in this schedule, we want to reassure you that we are doing everything possible to make changes for the next two sessions. For the rest of this enrichment period, we are asking for your help. Please send your child with a 3X5 card with their schedule written on the card. Also, we are now asking that each child bring a folder, a pencil, a book, and a snack to enrichment. Furthermore, if your student is not enrolled in a class, including the TA class, we are asking that you either pick up your child or be with them on campus. With so many students here at one time, we are concerned for their safety when they are not enrolled in a class. Unfortunately, we do not have the man power to watch over them while we are teaching. Finally, please make sure your student knows the pick up plan and is picked up on time. This will ease their worry at the end of a very long day. We appreciate all that you do and know that with your help our next four sessions will be a success. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact Deanna Downs.
