Grade 5-6 Mill Village Consolidated Elementary School
                         Mrs. Michelle Verge-Bollivar

Welcome to our 5-6 Classroom!
I am looking forward to a great year of fun, growth, and learning.

CURRICULUM

I will be teaching English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social
Studies, Art and Health.

I have organized and laid out a yearly plan of outcomes to be covered for
each subject area I will be teaching this year. These plans are available to
parents by requesting a copy. I will be following the provincial curriculum
and the outcomes (expected learning targets) are available on the South Shore
Regional School Board website.

MANAGEMENT

This year will expose students to many strategies for organizing themselves
and developing responsible behaviours. These skills will be extremely
helpful in the upcoming years of their education.

Students will be part of a community, in a comfortable, safe and inviting
classroom. They will be respected and involved in the creation of a set of
expectations and consequences that will be used in the classroom. I believe
that students are more accountable for their behaviours if they are involved
in the creation of this classroom conduct policy. Students are also expected
to comply with the PEBS code of conduct followed at Mill Village Consolidated
Elementary School.

POLICIES

Homework will be assigned as needed. This is generally work that is started
in class but was not completed. Students are expected to complete
assignments to the best of their ability and on time. There will be larger
projects from time to time. Students will be given some class time for some
of this project work. If homework is not completed regularly, a call will be
made home to ensure that you, the parent, is aware of the situation.
Students will be expected to complete the work not done.
Homework will be written in the student’s agenda every day and posted on my
website every night. All tests, assessments, and project evaluations will be
sent home for your signature, and must be returned to me the next day.

Students are expected to attend school on a regular basis, and to be on time.

Students need to be prepared for class.

Students must be respectful of themselves; their peers; the classroom and its
contents; all school staff; and me.

Our school is both peanut and scent free. Please follow this as someone's
life may depend on it.

COMMUNICATION

Report cards will be sent home to inform you of your child’s progress.
Parent/Teacher conferences will also be held during the year.

I will make phone calls home as needed.

My website (when ready) will be updated regularly to keep you up to date on
events, homework, curriculum, etc. It will have an e-mail link for your
convenience in contacting me.

I am available at the school during regular hours, or you can e-mail me at
mbollivar@staff.ednet.ns.ca. Feel free to contact me with any questions or
concerns you may have.

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

Students will be assessed in numerous ways. They will be given the
opportunity to self assess and assess their peers. I feel it is essential to
give choices in some assignments in order to give all learners a chance for
success. Rubrics will be used so expectations are clear.

Observation checklists, written assignments, quizzes, tests, presentations,
journals, projects, and classroom discussions are some, but not all, of the
ways students will be evaluated.

I will constantly assess students learning to ensure that they get the
education they need in order to have a successful year.

CLOSING

In closing I would like to invite all parents and guardians to get involved
this year.

Again, WELCOME back , and I look forward to working with you and helping your
children to have a fantastic and successful year.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Michelle Verge-Bollivar (Mrs. B)
