Homework

Except for periodic special assignments, we will have homework Monday through Thursday as follows:
READING/LANGUAGE ARTSMATH
15+ Minutes Daily5 to 10 Minutes Daily
Reading to and/or with your child is very important for the development of reading comprehension. When you read, your child can concentrate on the details of stories: setting, plot, characters, problem and solution, author's purpose, theme, mood, etc. This will usually be the "B" side of the Saxon worksheet we have done in class that day. You may refer to the "A" side for any reteaching needed.
As students begin to read on their own it is most beneficial to use a combination of your reading, your child reading to you, and both of you reading together.Since this will be reinforcement of what we learned during the day, try to encourage your child to do the thinking while you help by reading directions and gently guiding your child in the right direction.
Don't forget to discuss what you are reading and ask questions such as, What was your favorite part? How do you think the character felt? or How could we change the end of the story?Remember, this is first grade level math so your child may need more help in the beginning of the year but most students can complete their homework with very little help as the year progresses.
In order to help meet the 15 minute reading requirement, you will receive a HOME READING packet on MONDAYS. This resource will include a book/s at your child's reading level, a letter sound practice sheet (until mastered), sight word lists, various skills worksheets, and enrichment activities. For extra practice, use the math fact flash cards as needed. Also, take a look at my "Helpful Links" page for other math practice ideas.
The HOME READING packet will be due on FRIDAYS.The math fact wrap-ups are a little difficult for kinders to handle at first but are a good alternative for math fact practice.
