| READING-
11/20: We are now starting unit 5 of Open Court which is
titled 'Weather.' The children will be introduced to stories and poems
related to different kinds of weather.
10/30: We have begun Unit 4 of Open Court. This unit is all about the
people who work in our neighborhoods. We will be reading many stories and
poems all baout different jobs in different kinds of neighborhoods.
9/30: We will begin Unit 3- Things That Go tomorrow. During this unit
of Open Court we will be reading stories and poems about transportation.
9/9: We have begun Unit 2 of our Open Court program. This unit is
titled 'Animals.' We will be reading stories and poems all about different
kinds of animals. A lot of our stories will be non-fiction and the kids
enjoy exploring all the different non-fiction genres.
8/18: We have begun Unit 1 of Open Court. It is entitled 'Let's
Read.' We will be reading poems and stories related to learning how to read.
While we read new stories together, we all practice being good
readers. To be a good reader there are many strategies that we use. We
visualize what is happening, we predict what will happen next, we ask
questions about things that we do not understand and we monitor and clarify
the information that we read. Please encourage your child to use these
strategies while they read with you.
WRITING-
11/20: Our Thanksgiving paragraphs are finished and up on the wall.
10/7: We have begun writing our Halloween paragraphs. Be on the look
out for their 'planning' packet to start coming home in next week's Thursday
folders.
9/24: Our first paragraphs of the year are now on display on our
writing wall. Please come by and read them! :)
9/4: We have begun writing our first 5 sentence paragraph. It is a
paragraph about themselves! Right now we have completed the planning step
and are in the middle of the writing step. Check back to find out when you
can see their paragraphs up on the writing wall.
We are also learning and practicing the 5 steps of writing. They are
plan, write, revise, check and share. The paragraphs that we will write in
first grade are 5 sentence paragraphs.
