If I volunteer in the classroom, what will I be doing?

Usually parents help during Reading Workshops, this will include
working with very small groups doing either projects, workbooks,
writing in journals, or parents will help run workshops.

What are Reading Workshops?

This is a time after full group reading. The students choose to
go to whatever workshop they would like while Mrs. Brocka is
working with small groups or individuals. Workshop time is when
students are able to practice different literacy skills. These
can include: listening workshop, computer, big books, sight word
practice, alphabet practice, independent reading, and writing.

Why does my child keep talking about putting up a magnet or a monkey?

Students can earn monkey magnets for good behavior. After 4
magnets, your child gets a positive note home. After 6 magnets,
your child gets to dig in the treasure box. After 8 magnets,
your child gets to visit the principal. Your child starts all
over after 8 magnets. I put a sticker on a chart each time
he/she reaches 8. After visiting the principal, your child will
remove all his/her magnets and start all over.

Why doesn't my child get a monkey magnet every day?

At the beginning of the year I will be very liberal with giving
out the monkey magnets so that each child could reach 8. After
that students earn magnets when I am trying to recognize a
specific behavior or trying to help students to understand what
behaviors are acceptable in class.

What is moving a banana?

Students move a monkey to a banana for disciplinary violations.
The first move (to one banana) is a warning, the second move
(two bananas) is a loss of half of recess, and the third move
(three bananas) is a loss of all of recess.
Students will move their monkeys for a variety of reasons:
continually talking out of turn, being unkind, disrespect,
physical aggression, and disobedience.
Students who are intentionally physically aggressive will
automatically be moved to three bananas and lose all of their
next recess. You will always get a note home if your child has
to move his monkey to a banana.

Why did my child lose all of recess for his/her first move of his/her monkey?

A child will automatically lose recess for any type of physical
aggression, even when joking around. There are no exceptions to
this. Physical aggression will not be tolerated.

What is the ice cream reward party?

The ice cream reward party is a reward for those students who
moved their monkey 3 or less times during a quarter. Students
who move their monkeys more than 3 times in the quarter are not
invited. This is not meant as a punishment for those students,
but as a way to acknowledge those students who continually
followed the rules. Many students are not recognized often
enough for such good behavior.
The party is always set after school in Mrs. Brocka's room. I
will send out notes after each quarter to let you know if your
child earned the party.
During the party the students eat ice cream and dance to kid
party music.
The party is always half an hour.

What is the marble jar?

As a class the students have a chance to earn a party (usually a
movie/popcorn party. When as a whole the class is doing
something I want to recongnize them for, I will put a marble in
their class jar. When the class is not behaving the way they
should, I will remove a marble. When the jar is filled up to a
line, the class has earned the party. This party is earned by
the ENTIRE class. No one student can lose this party.

Why is my child's picture not on the website?

At the beginning of the year you filled out paperwork. This
paperwork indicated that you did not want your child's picture
published publically. If you would like your child's picture on
the website, you will need to go to the school office and ask
Judy Poulliot what form you need to fill out to have your
child's picture on the site.

My child has a birthday during a vacation or in the summer, can we still send in treats to celebrate his/her birthday?

Can I send birthday invitations to school to be delivered to students?

Only if you are inviting all of the boys (if you child is a
boy), all of the girls (if your child is a girl), or the entire
class. If you are inviting only certain students, please deliver
those invitations outside of school and encourage your child not
to talk about the party in school.

What is the school's policy for vacations during school or absences?

Please view school as a priority, and see to it that your child
attends everyday except in cases of illness or emergency. If you
plan on missing school for a few days you will need to come into
the school and fill out a form informing us of your intent. No
homework will be sent with your child prior to an absence. If
your child will not be attending for the day due to illness or
other reasons, please contact the attendance line at 303-243-
5210. Homework will be available to ill children on the 2nd day
of their absence (or whenever they get back).

How can I get contact information for other families at the school?

The school is not legally allowed to give out parent phone
numbers, emails, etc. without the family's explicit permission.
Sometime in September (I think) a student directory is published
with all student names and classes as well as phone numbers and
addresses for those families who have given permission to have
that information published. The directories will be available
for purchase (watch Thursday folders for this info). The easiest
way to contact a parent is for you to send me the request with
your contact info on it and your permission to send that info to
the family you wish to contact. I will then forward that info on
to the family and they can then contact you if they are
interested.
