Many of you are anxious to know what we have been testing your kindergartner
on. Here is how the process works and what kinds of test we have been giving:
Mrs. Enos (one of the kindergarten aide's) and I are both testing kids at
the same time.
She takes one student for 15 minutes and asks them some basic math questions
to give us a feel for what kind of a math background your child has. Here
are the things your child is asked about for math:
Shapes, counting by 1's, matching items up with a 1-1 correspondence,
matching sets and numbers, identifying coins, sorting, identifying fewest
and most, measurement, identifying numbers 1-10, and identifying which
number is bigger out of two numbers.
Not all tests are necessarily given today, I will continue to testing
throughout the next few weeks. Other tests I may give: sequencing numbers
(what number is missing) and identifying numbers 1-20.
While Mrs. Enos is testing one student, I am testing another student for 15
minutes on math (we switch students after 15 minutes, so they all see both
of us). Here are the things your child is asked about for reading:
ability to write name
Alphabet recognition (upper and lower case), rhyming, and being able to hear
the initial sound of a word. I am also having all students read with me.
I will try to get the results of these tests to you soon, however, I won't
get them to you until I am completely finished with this first round of
testing (in a few weeks).
Please don't panic. This will not be the only test I give your child. I
realize that he/she may have been too nervous to perform to his/her best
ability. I give many tests throughout the year, this is to just give me a
general idea of what kinds of needs I will need to address in my teaching
over the next few weeks.
