What We Learned This Week

Nov. 16-20

The Pilgrims

  • The Mayflower

  • Thanksgiving Day Celebration

Bullying: Mr. Barber came into my classroom today to teach us about why we shouldn't tease others and how we are a "telling" school. Students are to tell an adult if someone is bullying. All of the students then signed a contract. This contract will be on display outside the classroom once all students have gotten a chance to sign it (including those who were absent).

 

Nov. 9-13

Last week we learned about fire safety and it became quickly apparent that many students were unable to recite their address and phone number (if they had to call 911). Please help your child learn this, it is very important!

Native American Peoples, Past and Present

  • Become familiar with the people and ways of life of at least one Native American tribe, such as:
    • Pacific Northwest:Kwakiutl
    • Southwest: Hopi
    • Plains: Sioux
    • Eastern Woodlands: Wampanoag

Before learning about Native Americans, I asked the students what they know about Native Americans. I wrote down everything they said, both correct and incorrect. Here it is.

AM Class: Columbus discovered them, their army protects, them, they have dark skin, they have white eyes, the live on a lake, don't live in houses, live in a tipi, they are called "Indians", have axes, use bow and arrows, use horses, they fight animals, and they fight bad guys.

PM Class: They started the 1st Thanksgiving, they started the 1st Valentines, they started the first Easter, they started the first Christmas, someone told them about God, they travelled the world, take care of pets, they have coyotes as pets, they are called "African Americans", they are called "Indians", they sailed the ocean, started America, fought in a war, served the people who came here and were hungry and helped them to plant seeds (Pilgrims), make necklaces, have long hair (including the men), make fire, don't like people to come to their islands, hunt for food on trees, hunt the following animals: buffalo, skunks, bears, fish, and deer, eat: crab legs, gourds, grapes, pumpkins, pumpkin seeds, pumpkin pie, apples, shrimp, eggs, corn, plums, and other kinds of seeds, their clothing is: ripped, made of buffalo fur, army stuff, and metal, they kill wolves to make sofas, they live in: an army, sticks/tents to make houses, tents, aprons, tipis, tikis, and make houses.
