*** Here is everything you need to know for Mrs. Walton's language arts and 
social studies classes for Monday, November 30, 2009.  ***


Reading:  We read chapter 9 of The Trojan War.  

Our next test will be Tuesday, December 8 and will cover chapters 9 – 13. 

A.R. points for the second quarter are due Wednesday, December 16 by 3:15 p.m.

Writing: Last week students began working on a poem using metaphor. We worked 
on that poem today in class and will again tomorrow. The final is due 
Wednesday. It needs to be typed in the color the poem is about. Font and size 
are your choice, but the poem only needs to cover half a page. It is one 
stanza only. If you don’t have a color printer, you may print it here at 
school or send it to me as an email and I will print it for you. 

Social Studies: We read about the Persian Wars. Students are working together 
in groups to create a timeline and map depicting dates, events, and places of 
the Persian Wars. This project is due Friday. We will work on this in class 
every day. 

We will have a test on Ancient Greece Wednesday, December 16.

Reading:  We had a test today.  

Our next test will be Tuesday, December 8 and will cover chapters 9 – 13.

Writing: We worked on metaphor.  Students began writing a poem about color 
using metaphor. There is no homework. We will finish the poem in class when 
we return from the Thanksgiving break. 

Social Studies: We discussed the ancient Olympics. Students completed a 
graphic organizer regarding 5 of the Greek city states and their roles at the 
Olympics. They are also working on vocabulary words from the unit. Most of 
this was completed in class. There is no homework. If you didn’t finish 
today, you can work on it when we return to school after the break. 

We will have a test on this unit Wednesday, December 16.

Reading:  Today we reviewed for tomorrow’s test. . 

Writing: We worked on simile.  Students completed a worksheet and 4 pages in 
their flipbooks. If you didn’t finish it is homework. 

Social Studies: We discussed the similarities and differences of Athens and 
Sparta. We also began a discussion on the ancient Olympics. Homework is to 
read pages 50 and 51 and take notes. 

	Greek City States are due tomorrow.

Reading:  Today we shared summaries and went over the comprehension questions 
for chapters 4 – 8. Homework is to complete this week’s TFK if you didn’t 
finish in class. 

Our next test will be Tuesday, November 24 on chapters 4 – 8. 

Writing: We worked on simile. There is no homework. 

Social Studies: We watched the video that Japan made at International Towne 
and had a popcorn party for  having the most students at the Family Fun 
Run/Walk out of 6th – 8th grades. 

The Greek city-state project is due November 24. If you are going to be out 
of town on the due date, you need to turn in the research and project before 
leaving town.

Reading:  Today we wrote a summary of chapters 4 – 8 and answered 
comprehension questions for those chapters. 

Our next test will be Tuesday, November 24 on chapters 4 – 8. 

Writing: We spent our LA time today working on The Trojan War. 

Social Studies: Today we discussed the city-states of Athens and Sparta. 
There is no homework. 

The Greek city-state project is due November 24. If you are going to be out 
of town on the due date, you need to turn in the research and project before 
leaving town.

Reading:  Today we read and discussed chapter 8 of The Trojan War. There is 
no homework.

Writing: Today we discussed onomatopoeia. Students completed a worksheet in 
class and a page in their flipbooks. 

Social Studies: Today we discussed the first chapter of the Greek unit, going 
over what should be in notes. Students read pages 44 – 49 and took notes. 
There is a worksheet in which students need to compare the city states of 
Athens and Sparta. If you did not finish this in class, it is homework. 

The Greek city-state project is due November 24. If you are going to be out 
of town on the due date, you need to turn in the research and project before 
leaving town.

Social Studies: Students continued researching ancient Greek City States.

Reading:  Today we read and discussed chapters 4 and 5 of The Trojan War. 
Students also began working on last Friday’s TFK. If you did not finish it is 
homework. 

Writing: Today students identified examples of assonance in The Raven and 
highlighted them in purple. If you didn’t finish, it is homework. 

Social Studies: Students began researching ancient Greek City States. This 
project is due November 24. If you are going to be out of town on the due 
date, you need to turn in the research and project before leaving town. We 
will conduct research again in class tomorrow, but all other work will need 
to be completed at home after tomorrow.

Reading:  Today we took a test on chapters 1 – 3 of The Trojan War. 

Writing: Today students identified examples of alliteration in The Raven and 
highlighted them in blue. 

Social Studies: Students were introduced to Ancient Greece. They read pages 
42 and 43 and took notes in class. I also told them about a project we will

Reading:  Test tomorrow on the first three chapters of The Trojan War. Study 
your vocabulary and comprehension questions for the test. 

Writing: Identify and underline or highlight in red, all examples of internal 
rhyme throughout the entire poem. 

Social Studies: We had a test today.

social studies classes for Wednesday, November 11, 2009.  ***

Reading:  Today students worked in pairs to finish answering questions for 
chapters 1 – 3 of The Trojan War. Students voted on changing the test date, 
and with an overwhelming vote of 48 – 2 (2 absent) the test on chapters 1 – 3 
will now be Friday. The students said they would like another day to work on 
the questions and more review.  A copy of the vocabulary and questions can be 
found under the language arts link. There is no homework for tonight. 

Writing: Today we continued identifying examples of alliteration, assonance, 
and internal rhyme in the poem The Raven.   There is no homework. 


Social Studies: We went over the study guide as a review for the test. 
Students were able to use the rest of social studies time to study for the 
test or work on other homework. With 4 tests scheduled for Friday, students 
decided that we will have the social studies test tomorrow.

Reading:  Today we read the first three chapters of The Trojan War and wrote 
a brief summary of those chapters together in class. We will have a test on 
these three chapters Thursday.  The test will include the vocabulary I 
provided and the comprehension questions for those chapters. We will begin 
working on the questions tomorrow in class and review Wednesday.  There is no 
reading homework tonight. 

Writing: Today students were given some background information about the poem 
The Raven, and I read the poem aloud to them in class.   There is no 
homework. 


Social Studies: Today we watched a short film about Napoleon Bonaparte. 
Students began reading chapters 11 and 12 and taking notes, which are due 
tomorrow.  Tuesday students will work on a study guide, Wednesday we will go 
over the study guide, Thursday we will review, and Friday we will have a 
test.

social studies classes for Friday, November 06, 2009.  ***

Reading:  Today students were introduced to the Trojan War, which is the 
novel we will begin reading in class Monday. Because of a limited supply of 
copies, reading will take place in school. The class will discuss reading 
elements as we read the novel and complete comprehension questions with each 
chapter. Students were given this week’s TFK in class today. If it wasn’t 
completed, it is homework. 

Writing: We will begin reading The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe Monday and 
identifying various forms of figurative language in the poem.    There is no 
homework. 


Social Studies: We reviewed chapters 1 – 10 of The French Revolution. Monday 
we will read and discuss chapters 11 and 12. Tuesday students will work on a 
study guide, Wednesday we will go over the study guide, Thursday we will 
review, and Friday we will have a test.

social studies classes for Thursday, November 5, 2009.  ***

We had a great time on our field trip to the Colorado Mountain Club. The kids 
enjoyed the rock climbing wall, a geology class, and touring the museum. 

As a reminder, if you did not turn in this week's TFK, it is due Friday. You 
also have a paragraph due Friday. The topic is "As a world leader I would..."

We had a great time on our field trip to International Towne today. The kids 
really worked well together and did and excellent job running the world. We 
have another field trip tomorrow to the Colorado Mountain Club. If you 
ordered hot lunch for tomorrow, please respond to the e-announcement that was 
sent by Mr. Duque. 

As a reminder, if you did not turn in this week's TFK, it is due Friday. You 
also have a paragraph due Friday. The topic is "As a world leader I would..."

We went to library today and students read and completed worksheets for a 
TFK. If you did not finish, it must be turned in by Friday when we meet for 
class again. 

Today students met as groups with their countries to finish preparations for 
International Towne. Yesterday students were assigned to write a paragraph on 
the following topic:

As a world leader I would........ 

Students need to think how the world could be a better place and what they 
could do globally to accomplish this if they were a world leader. This 
paragraph is now due on Friday. 

We have a field trip tomorrow and again Thursday.  Don't forget to bring your 
drink and lunch!

Today students met as groups with their countries to prepare for 
International Towne. Students were assigned to write a paragraph on the 
following topic:

As a world leader I would........ 

Students need to think how the world could be a better place and what they 
could do globally to accomplish this if they were a world leader. This 
paragraph is due Thursday. 

The paragraph that was assigned last week before the snow hit, "When the Well 
Runs Dry", is due tomorrow.

social studies classes for Tuesday, October 27, 2009.  ***

Reading:  We continued our discussion about water, and students began working 
on a paragraph to respond to a prompt in their booklets. This is due for a 
grade Friday. It can be either handwritten or typed. 

Writing: Today students learned about alliteration, assonance, consonance, 
and internal rhyme. We wrote sentences using alliteration and our first 
names. There is no homework for poetry.    


Social Studies: Today students made a personal flag that will be part of a 
larger flag at International Towne. If you did not finish in class, I must 
have it tomorrow.

social studies classes for Monday, October 26, 2009.  ***

Reading:  This week some of our lessons will be about our trip to 
International Towne (IT). Today we discussed the sustainability of water and 
the importance to do so. Students participated in whole class discussion and 
then completed a paged in their IT workbooks. .  

Writing: We will study figurative language through the use of poetry and 
other poetic elements during the next few weeks. Our first poem of study will 
be The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. Today students learned a little about the 
author by doing an online scavenger hunt. If you did not complete this in 
class it is homework and due tomorrow.   


Social Studies: Today we learned about some of the customs in the countries 
represented when we visit International Towne.  The students found this to be 
very interesting.
