| SOAR is SOAR to Success, a small group reading intervention program
published by Houghton Mifflin. It is designed to be used with small
group of students in grades three through six. It may be used in addition
to the regular classroom reading instruction in grades 3, 4, and 5..
SOAR is based on existing reading research. The main goals are:
1) To accelerate students' reading abilities as quickly as possible.
2) Help students learn to apply the comprehension and decoding
strategies and skills of effective readers as they read across
the curriculum.
SOAR uses four basic reading strategies everyday. These are:
1) Predict- what is likely to happen or be learned next.
2) Clarify- to make clearer, to reread or discuss the process used to
clear up confusions. Students may clarify word pronounciations,
word meanings or ideas that are confusing.
3) Question- after reading, ask questions for others to answer.
4) Summarize- tell in your own words the key points of what
were read. A summary may include characters, setting, problem,
main events and the outcome.
SOAR uses graphic organizers to help students construct meaning.
These are visual diagrams of the ideas presented in the text. They may
include a story map, KWL chart, semantic map, event map, or story
frame.
SOAR uses reciprocal teaching- the teacher and students take turns
being the teacher, modeling the strategies.
