| AR stands for Accelerated Reading. Accelerated Reading was
designed by Karen Crabtree. She based her teaching principles on
Marie Clay's Reading Recovery. Accelerated Reading is a first grade
reading program designed to assist first grade students in their reading
and writing skills. The students meet with their AR teacher every day
one on one for thirty minutes for approximately 12-16 weeks. This
instuction targets decoding strategies, phonics, sight words,
comprehension, writing, and letter identification. This extra instuction, in
addition to classroom instruction, seeks to accelerate the students
reading achievement to help the child meet grade level expectations
with success.
