Mrs. Betz and Mrs. King
Tomorrow!!!!! We are going to the ZOO!! March 23rd
Parents are welcome to join us on this trip! As with any DPS field trip, we cannot invite any additional children to join us. TBK funds will pay for students, parents will need to pay the regular entrance fee. Our bus will be filled with kindergarteners and parents will need to drive and meet us there. We will leave school at 9:15 and the bus will pick us up at the zoo at 1:30 to bring us back. Parents can gather with us at school at 9:00 then plan to meet us at the school group entrance by Tropical Discovery. You can purchase tickets there. T-SHIRTS The children all have tie dyed t-shirts to wear to the zoo. Mrs. King’s class will be in purple and Mrs. Betz’s class will be in green. We usually ask parents to send a shirt, but we forgot to ask before our early trip this year. If you would like to contribute $2.00 for the shirt we would really appreciate it. They will wear them again for the performance and for Field Day. We will picnic at the zoo. Every child will need to bring a lunch and a drink. Children will carry their lunch in their backpacks. That is the ONLY thing that should be in their backpacks. We will not make any purchases at the zool Be sure your child’s backpack comes tomorrow with a lunch and a drink and nothing else. Please put sunscreen on your child tomorrow morning. Children will need good, comfortable walking shoes. The zoo is big and hilly. We should be back at school at about 2:00.
Dress Code: Please be sure children are not wearing flip flops or spaghetti straps. Girls need shorts under skirts and dresses unless wearing tights.
Wishes: The year is nearly over, but we are out of tissues and band aids! We are collecting cardboard egg cartons for a spring project.

You must use nickels, dimes, and quarters to buy postcards, envelopes and stamps at the Kindergarten Post offices. This is a great time to pull the change out of your pocket or wallet and count it with your child. We are playing exchange games in class and your child should be able to teach you how to play! January 25. 2012 The Planetarium and Hands on Science Room was fascinating. Hopefully the children have told you all about the sun, the moon, planet earth, electricity, magnets, T-Rex teeth, and more! Look for a student made chapter book all about our Solar System. Mrs. Wishy-Washy came last week! She always comes into Denver for the Stock Show and she made time to visit Southmoor before she went back to the farm. Ask your child to tell you all about it! The 100th Day of School will be on February 3. We have heard from many parents who will be coming to help with the celebration. We have put confirmations in today’s Thursday folders. Many of the 100 Day Projects have come in and, WOW, they are very creative! You can see them in the showcases in the front of the school. Mail Call!! Be sure to find the bag of envelopes in the Thursday Folder. You will also find directions in the bag. As you address the envelopes for the US mail, please think of friends and family who live far away. If you are from another country or state or have connections in another country or state, please include them in this project. If additional postage is required, please put it on the envelope. It is much more fun to find Indianapolis or Moscow than Denver on the map! You will notice that Valentine’s Day has joined the list of important upcoming dates. When choosing Valentine’s Day cards, please keep in mind that each will need an envelope. If your child selects cards that do not have envelopes, please get envelopes for them. We will send an address list and more information next week. February is the time for us to conference with students who may need interventions. We will contact you if we need to set up a conference. If you would like to have a conference with us, please let us know. Progress reports will be coming home in March. We will have a Celebration of Learning in May. This will be a day of student-led conferences during which children will have the opportunity to show just how much they have learned in kindergarten. Friday, February 3 – 100th Day of Kindergarten! Friday, February 3, 2012 will be the 100th day of Kindergarten. Many parents have let us know that they will be able to join in the celebration. There is still room for more. If you cannot attend for the whole morning, we would still love to have you come for as long as you can. Our celebration is scheduled from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. This academic celebration will include many stations for the students to have fun while developing number sense. We have been reading many different versions of the Gingerbread Man. Ask your child to tell you about them. Did you know there was even a Gingerbread Cowboy? We are comparing the settings, characters, problems and endings in the stories. You might talk about these story elements in the stories that you are reading with your children at home. An awareness of the story elements leads to increased comprehension and helps to enrich their own writing as well. Homework - Ask your child for a command performance. Ask them to tell you the story of the Gingerbread Man in their own special way. Everyone who tells the story tells it differently! We hope the children are having a chance to use EverydayMath online and Reading Eggs at home. It is pretty amazing how technology has changed kindergarten learning!

Monday, January 16- No School - MLK Day Thursday, January 19 - Kindergarten Round-up ********************************************************************************************************************************* December 2, 2011 Many of the math concepts in kindergarten are taught and practiced through games. We hope you have been playing Monster Squeeze and Domino games at home. Another great math game is called Top It in Everyday Math. We always called it War and played with a regular deck of cards. The children have all had a chance to login to everyday math games online. This site supports the math and math games that we are doing in school. We have put a card with your child’s user id and password in today’s Thursday Folder. If you have a computer at home, please help your child login and navigate the sight at home. The kindergarten games are in the section called Early Childhood. We have been learning about our senses. Ask your child to tell you about Sound Bingo! This is the last month that we will have Ms. Lucier in kingergarten. She is a wonderful teacher and has been an incredible asset to our program. We will sorely miss her. Please be aware of our quickly changing weather. We will go outside everyday unless it is raining, snowing, or below 22◦. Sometimes the mornings are warm then the cold blows in for the afternoon. Please be sure the children are appropriately dressed. Homework: Login to EverydayMath online. The url is http://em-ccss.everydaymathonline.com/g_login.html or, it is easily accessible through www.dpsk12.org on the parents and students page on the right side of the page! The children are role playing selling tickets, popcorn and drinks as well as practice storytelling with the puppets. Homework: Ask the children what they are most thankful for. You will find several new Halloween songs and poems in the notebook this weekend to help you get into the spirit of the holiday. Please encourage your child to read them to you!
It was great to have the chance to speak with so many parents this month. A child is always
more successful with the parents, teachers and students work together. If you ever have questions or concerns about your child's experience in kindergarten, please let us know.
Well..It has happened. There have been several coats and hats left in the kindergarten classroom
that our students have not been able to identify. PLEASE PUT NAMES IN EVERYTHING!! Homework - Halloween Candy Sort! Although a bag full of candy can be overwhelming in many ways...It can also be a terrific opportunity to excercise those math skills! Look in the Thursday folder for a sorting, counting and graphing activity!
Friday and Monday, October 28, 31 – Fall Break – No School Thursday and Friday, November 10, 11 -NO SCHOOL (Veteran's Day and Assessment) Monday, November 14 FIELD TRIP to the Denver Puppet Theater Wednesday-Friday, November 23-25 Thanksgiving Break ******************************************************************************************** October 20, 2011 ☺ Halloween is just around the corner. While there will not be a Southmoor Halloween celebration, we will be learning songs and poems and reading stories and doing some Halloween crafts in kindergarten. ☺Please be sure to ask your child every day what they have brought home from school. It reinforces and extends their learning when they read their books to you and tell you about the work they have done in class. Continue to play domino math games too! ☺Please Put names on everything that you send to school with the children. It is amazing how their things travel to odd places and how difficult it can be for children to identify their belongings! Conferences! We have started meeting with parents. If you have not scheduled a conference yet, please contact your child’s teacher! We look forward to meeting with all of you! ☺ Homework - Writing about fall - The children are writing more and more. Encourage your child to sound out words and write the words that they hear. This helps them become independent writers. Spelling does not count! Thursday, October 20 – CSC Fall Forum – Adults only October – Parent conferences as scheduled October 28, 31 – Fall Break – No School ************************************************************************************************ October 13, 2011 ☺ Wow! What a busy week! We were fortunate to have so many parents join Mrs. King’s class for the trip to the Fire Station on Monday the kids are still talking about the 100 foot bucket ladder. Then on Wednesday, we had lots of parents go with Mrs. Betz’s class! It certainly was exciting when the alarms went off and the fire fighters all jumped into their clothes and zoomed off with the sirens blaring! AND this morning we were honored to have so very many moms come for a special morning! Look for our new MOM songs in the notebook this weekend! ☺Writing – The children’s writing is really showing growth! They wrote about the trip to the fire station this week. When they are writing, we encourage them to say their words slowly and listen to the letters that they hear. At first, that will be just a beginning consonant but with practice more letters will appear and writing becomes more readable. When writing with your child, don’t stress about spelling just yet, encourage them to hear the sounds. Perfection is not a requirement. Writing is another way that our sight words can be useful for the children. Conferences! We have started meeting with parents. If you have not scheduled a conference yet, please contact your child’s teacher! ☺ Homework - Domino Math! Tomorrow the children will bring home a domino math packet. We have been doing a variety of counting and addition games with the dominos in class this week and they are ready to teach Mom and Dad how to play too! They do not need to return any of this to class. The packet is for continued play at home. Wednesday, October 19 – Science Night – Parents and Children Thursday, October 20 – CSC Fall Forum – Adults only October – Parent conferences as scheduled October 28, 31 – Fall Break – No School ********************************************************************************************** October 6, 2011 ☺ Field Trip!! October is Fire Safety month and we will be taking a walking trip to Fire Station #22. The firefighters will give us a tour of the station and their equipment and help us to understand what we should do if there is an emergency. Parents and families are welcome to join us on this trip! Please let us know if you will be able to join us. The schedule is: Monday, October 10 – Mrs. King’s class 9:30 – about 11:30 Wednesday, October 12 – Mrs. Betz’s class 9:30 – about 11:30 ☺Reading Eggs – We have entered the children in readingeggs.com This a great interactive website for children. They can improve their reading skills and have a great time all at once! They have all taken the pretest and started on their level. They will probably need a little assistance at first. You will find a letter of introduction and your child’s login and password in today’s Thursday folder. A big Thank You to the PTA for funding this! ☺Sight Words! We have introduced the first list of sight words. The children have taken home Orange flash cards to practice at home. Many of our friends have already mastered them and are ready for the next list! Please ask your child about these and help them practice at home. Yoplait for Your Mama –Thursday, October 13- 8:30-9:00 Kindergarten Mamas are welcome to come in the classroom with the children and we will have a special song for you. Conferences! No School Tomorrow or Monday!! Friday, September 16 & Monday, September 19 ☺Apples, Apples Everywhere!! We had fun examining, graphing, analyzing, writing about, and, of course, TASTING apples in kindergarten! We made a picture graph and a bar graph. We tasted, red, dark red, green and yellow apples. We looked at the inside and the outside and used many words to describe what we saw. We even learned about the life cycle of an apple. Ask your child to tell you all about it! ☺We have competed our assessments and have grouped children for reading instruction. They are just beginning to get their colored folder books at the “Just Right” reading level. CONFERENCES will be the week of October 24. We will send more information soon. ☺We have established the going home routines for the children now. If your child’s going home plan will be different one day, PLEASE LET US KNOW. We need a note, email, or phone call from a parent if your plans change. We cannot take your child’s word for it that he will be going home with a friend. We will honor your needs, but we need to know what they are. If you enroll your child in an after school program, please let us know that as well so that we can be sure they get to the right place. ☺We have several students with food allergies. If your child has a food allergy, please provide us with a pre-packaged snack that is safe for your child that he may have when we have a birthday celebration. Our birthday celebrations involve both classes. If you plan to send a treat PLEASE let us know and plan on 50 children. ☺Homework The Apple Story is in this week’s folder. Please get an apple and a knife and read it to your child. Four Day Weekend!! No School - Friday, September 16 or Monday, September 29. The Moose is Loose Walk/Carnival will be Saturday, September 24. Yoplait for your Mama! Friday, October 13- 8:30 – 9:00 ******************************************************************************************** September 19, 2011 ☺Everyone smiled nicely for our pictures on Tuesday. ☺Everyone has now made their book boxes. Keep these in a special place because we will be making MANY Books in Kindergarten. ☺We are beginning a unit on APPLES. Please take your child to the grocery store to pick out an apple to bring to class on Monday. Any color/variety will be great! We will examine them, write about them, sort them, graph them and even eat them! ☺ Writing the “Kindergarten Way” Please continue practicing writing names using one capital letter and the others lower case. ☺ Please do not send children to school with “Silly Bands.” They are a terrible distraction in class and have a tendency to shoot across the room. Beginning Monday, we will collect any Silly Bands that come into the classroom. ☺The weather is changing. PLEASE make sure that names are on all sweaters, jackets, hats, scarves, gloves that come to school. Students may need them in the morning but in afternoon when it is warmer, they don’t remember what they brought. ☺The easiest way to pay for lunch or milk is to put some money in your child’s account. We will be sure he has his card to access his account. It is difficult for children to keep track of cash and coin at school. Four Day Weekend!! No School - Friday, September 16 or Monday, September 19. The Moose is Loose walk will be Saturday, September 24. ****************************************************************************************** September 1, 2011 ☺PLEASE be sure your child’s name is clearly visible on backpack, lunchbox, jacket, hat, ANYTHING your child brings to school! Your child may recognize it, but no one else will! ☺Many of our students are participating in the school lunch program. Please be aware that BlackJack Pizza Day is the 2nd Thursday of each month. The menu does not reflect this but it is a very popular lunch with the children! ☺ Homework Writing the “Kindergarten Way” Parents! Please help us with our names! Most of our children can write there names. Many are using more than one capital letter. Many are forming letters in unusual and difficult ways. We have sent a practice sheet for your child’s name. We went over this in class. Please sit with your child as they practice writing their name THE KINDERGARTEN WAY. All letters should start at the top. Starting points are indicated on this sheet. Please encourage your child to start at the starting point and use lower case letters. Our Handwriting Without Tears Program begins with the capital letters, but we need to fast track our students on the lower case letters in their names so they can write there names fluidly. No School - Monday, September 5. Picture Day is Tuesday,September 6. No School - Friday, September 16 or Monday, September 19. The Moose is Loose walk will be Saturday, September 24. ******************************************************************************************** ☺It was wonderful to see so many of you last night for Curriculum Night. We will send the information home with students whose parents were unable to attend.
☺It has been a remarkably smooth transition to a full day of school! The children have figured out who goes where and how the lunchroom works! We have been exhausted and exhilarated by the end of the day. We hope the children have been as well. Just a reminder that you can write a check to put money in your child’s lunch account. They have a special card, which we keep at school, that they use to draw money from that account when they buy lunch or milk. The lunchroom will send a note when you are out. We think we have been getting everyone to the right place after school. Some go on the bus. Some go to after school Kaleidoscope Corner, and some walk out with us to Peach Street. If your plans change for your child, please let us know!
☺ Children will be bringing home their notebooks on Fridays. We hope you enjoy listening to your children read the songs in this notebook with the “Reading Finger.” They will have new songs/poems every week! Please be sure the notebooks come back to school every Monday. If your child does not yet have a notebook, please be sure it is here by Mondays.
☺ GIRLS!! Please wear shorts under skirts and dresses!

No Schoolon September 5 – Labor Day
Reminder!! Children’s names need to be on everything they bring to school; jackets, sweaters, backpacks, lunch boxes, hats, EVERYTHING! Our lost and found becomes astounding rather quickly!
If you would like to receive this weekly newsletter electronically please email your child’s teacher and we will add you to the list. ************************************************************************ Hello Kindergarteners! Mrs. Betz and Mrs. King are busy getting ready for Kindergarten! We are excited to meet our new kindergarten friends! We hope to meet most of you on Monday the 15th at Southmoor's Open House. If you have your supplies (or some of them) you can bring them to the open house. That makes things a little easier and less confusing on the first day. We will take good care of them! The first 3 days of kindergarten, Aug 18, 19, 22 will be half days for all kindergarteners. They will be dismissed at the Peach Street door at 11:40. We will walk them down to the sidewalk to stand by the brick wall to meet parent there. Each child will need to tell the teacher, " I see my ......" before they disappear. Please do not take your child until we know who you are and that you have him. Full day students will not be able to ride the bus home on these three days. These afternoons are set aside for individual student assessments. We will have a sign-up sheet in the classroom at the Open House for you to schedule a 20 min appointment for your child. These assessments help us get to know your child and tailor instruction to his/her instructional level. We will not be able to get everyone in during these three days. The rest will be done during the school day, but it helps to get some done before we really get going! We are also excited to announce that Miss Kathryn Lucier will be student teaching with Mrs. Betz this fall. You can meet her on the 15th at the open house too! Mrs. Betz is sad to report that she will miss the first two days of kindergarten because she will be taking her daughter to college. Isn't it amazing that college begins on the same day as kindergarten? Mrs. Betz's and Mrs. King's very good friend and former Southmoor first grade teacher Miss Maes will be in kindergarten to get everything started along with Mrs. Uren. The first day of kindergarten is SO exciting (and kind of scary!) We will just have to have a second first day of kindergarten on Monday. That will be Mrs. Betz's first day! Dates of Note: Monday, August 15 @ 6:00 Southmoor Open House Thursday, August 18 @ 8:55 First day of kindergarten (18, 19, 22 are 1/2 days for all Kindergarteners) Tuesday, August 23 First Full day of Kindergarten Wednesday, August 24 @ 5:15 New family orientation Wednesday, August 24 @ 6:00 Curriculum Night (Adults only) Monday, September 5 - NO SCHOOL - Labor Day Tuesday September 5 - PICTURE DAY!!
