Math Take Home Activities
During the last week of April, in honor of Math Awareness Month, our students
focused their mathematics instructional time learning and playing games found
in our Investigations math program. The role of mathematical games is key in
helping our children develop familiarity with the number system. Playing games
encourages strategic mathematical thinking as students find an optimal way to
solve a problem. There is probably no activity in mathematics that children
take more seriously than their games.
Once those games have been used in the classroom and students have become
familiar with them the Pierson staff will choose one or two as “Math Take-Home
Activities.” The Friends of Pierson was gracious enough to provide us with
$700 for the materials we need to make up the games so that our students can
use them at home. This will be a way for parents to connect with what their
children are learning in mathematics as well as provide students with
activities at home that reinforce mathematical thinking. It will also give
students a way to start a collection of math activities that they can use at home.
We are looking for a group of parents to help organize/prepare these games for
our students. If you can help run-off materials or if you would be able to
work at home to cut out and organize game pieces, we need your help. Any
parent interested in being part of this group should contact Diana Avino by
either filling out the form below and returning it to your child’s teacher or
contacting her directly through e-mail at davino@clintonpublic.org. We will
meet together early in May so that we can have games ready to go home with
students along with their summer work packets. Also, anyone who can either
donate or knows an inexpensive resource for us to obtain resealable plastic
bags (on sale or at cost) please let Diana Avino know. We are planning to put
each game in a plastic bag.
Thank you again for all you do,
Diana Avino
