B7 February News Update
Remember that students have their Study Island "log in" numbers and they
should be going on the second grade skills practice.
Students are now asked to log DAILY reading on the Reading Log in their
folders. Something should be written EVERY DAY to show students are reading
for the required 20 minutes. Please include what pages (page numbers) were
read.
In Language Arts we are working on NonFiction Text features and NonFiction
Texts. We are using Big Books in our shared reading, NF texts in Guided
Reading and Magazines and Articles for Independent Reading as well as more
Shared Reading. We continue practicing using the text to "back up" or "prove"
our answers/opinions by listing details from the text. Please practice this
skill with students when doing homework and reading at home both for NF and F
texts.
We are working on the writing pieces for our constellations. We used webs to
help us in our writing. The Writing Process includes writing rough drafts,
editing, revising and adding details to our writing pieces.
In Science we are finishing our unit on the Night Sky and Phases of the Moon.
We learned the stories of the constellations from different cultures, and the
names of the phases of the moon and what causes these changes. We also had a
blast with Mr. M. from the Roton Planetarium where we learned more about the
constellations and the moon.
In Social Studies we completed our Community unit. We practiced map skills
and created our own map keys, compass roses and more. Students also learned
about and compared: Urban Communities, Suburban Communities, and Rural
Communities.
In Math students are learning about Money, Time and Data collection.
Students will be reviewing coins, and counting coins, making change, solving
problems involving rates, solving problems with elapsed time, telling time to
the quarter hour, and analyzing and comparing data.
Parents are also asked to continue practicing adding and Subtracting 2-Digit
Numbers as many students are still struggling with this skill especially when
regrouping is necessary.
Remember that students should be dressing in layers now that the cold weather
has arrived! Students may bring in a sweater or sweatshirt to leave in the
room for when they get chilly. T-shirts are not appropriate now that it is
colder! Remember to put names on tags!
Students need a HEALTHY SNACK DAILY. Sugary snacks and chips are not
appropriate for our morning snack time. MANY STUDENTS ARE FORGETTING SNACKS
OR ARE BRINGING CANDY AND JUNK FOOD.
Remind your child of healthy food choices.
