The Trumbull School District recommends 240 minutes per week of homework for 4th grade students. This does NOT include the 20 minutes of voluntary reading for the F.R.E.E. calendar each night, or the BEAR Math Facts monthly packet. However, the more your child reads and practices math, the stronger they will become in these areas. We all want our children to succeed! Here are some guidelines for helping with homework. These tips are by Dr. Charles Fay, a nationally known speaker, parent, and school psychologist. * Set aside time each day for children to do their homework. Parents can model the value of learning by reading a book at this time, too. *Help your child only if they really want it. Your child's desire to complete their assignment alone is a very healthy indication of independence and responsibility. *Focus on what your child does well. As will be discussed at Back to School Night, you can let me know the level of difficulty your child may have had with an assignment, so that I can provide further help the next day. *Help your child as long as they are doing most of the work. Their self- esteem will soar when they achieve something challenging and this will help lay the groundwork for them to be more prepared for the 'real world' one day. The Cardinal Rule for Helping: NEVER WORK HARDER THAN YOUR CHILD! Please let me know if your child has a difficult time with the homework assignment. I will meet with them first thing in the morning to review it. Mrs. Weinstein
