GOALS:
Students will be exposed to positive reading, writing, listening,
viewing and speaking experiences in order to become life-long readers and
writers.
PROGRAM:
The Language Arts Reading class is a required course on the eight
grade teams. It is designed as a program that encourages and teaches
children to become independent readers, writers, and thinkers. The
connection between these three things will be reinforced throughout the
year. During the course of the school year, students will read the required
CORE book, The Outsiders, as well as, additional novels and numerous short
stories (fictions and nonfiction). Also, they will be required to read
independently. In addition, grammar, vocabulary and writing strategies will
be taught.

GRADING CRITERIA:
Grades will be based on a point system. Points will be assigned as follows:
35% Reading Projects and Tests
35% Writing Projects and Tests
20% Quizzes
10% Homework
Extra Help is available by appointment before and after school and during
Learning Center.
