Ms. Cassel has been teaching at Harborside Middle School since 1997. She
graduated from Southern CT State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Art
Education. She earned a Master's of Liberal Studies from Wesleyan
University. In 2003 she earned National Board Certification. Although she
likes to do anything involving art, drawing, painting and printmaking are
the art forms she enjoys the most. She has travelled to many places
including England, Ireland, Spain, China and Italy. While she was in Italy
(Ms. Latham went too!) she took a painting class and it was one
of the happiest weeks of her life. During the summer of 2008, she went to
France for two weeks and saw many amazing things such as the Eiffel Tower,
The Louvre, Notre Dame (the gargoyles are AMAZING up close!!!!), the
Normandy Beaches, and Chateau Country. Someday she would like to visit
Japan, Greece, Australia and drive across the United States in an RV.
Picasso said, "Every child is an artist, he just forgets that when he grows
up". We all have some kind artistic potential in us. Some of us are
painters, some are sculptors or potters. Middle school art is all about
finding the artist you have inside you. Art is about taking risks, making
choices, creating good and bad art while learning about yourself
and the world around you through these artistic experiences. Some of the
reasons that people create art are to express their thoughts, feelings and
ideas, to decorate the world around them, to tell a story, record what is in
the world around us and to make money. Sometimes, though, we make art simply
because it makes our lives more meaningful. The mission for this class is to
help each student discover and cultivate his/her artistic potential.
