 HILLCREST MIDDLE SCHOOL
PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROCEDURES

GRADING PROCEDURES (based on a 30-class trimester)

30% Daily class preparation (1 point per class)
60%	Daily class participation (2 points per class)
10%	Reflective writing activities (1 per trimester)
100%

CLASS PREPARATION:

*	Students are expected to be on time for every class unless they have
a late pass from another teacher.

*	Student is to have proper activity clothing (shorts/sweatpants, T-
shirt [no tank tops] /sweat shirt, sneakers [no elevated soles or sneakers
without heel coverage}) for every class. Activity clothing must be
different
than that worn to school. Sandals, healies and platform sneakers are not
considered
proper activity clothing. Shorts should be of appropriate length (they
should extend beyond the fingertips when arms are at the student’s side) and
should be properly worn above the waist. Failure to adhere to these rules
will mean the student will be considered unprepared for class.

*	No jewelry is to be worn to Physical Education class. Instructors
will strictly enforce this rule. It is suggested that on days when a
student
is scheduled to participate in Physical Education class that he/she not wear
jewelry on that day or leave jewelry in their school locker. Students will
lose credit if jewelry is worn to class. If a student reports to the gym
wearing any jewelry (other than stud earrings), s/he will be considered
unprepared for class.

*	If a student is unable to participate in class due to a medical
problem, then the student must bring a dated, signed note from their parent
or doctor to each class. If a child is to be excused from participation due
to a medical reason(s) for more than two (2) consecutive classes, a note
from
a doctor must be brought in and it must show the date the student can resume
participation.

*	Lockers are provided for students during the time they meet for
class; students are responsible for obtaining their own locks and for
locking
up their belongings. Teachers will not hold any valuables. Students are
encouraged not to leave anything other than clothes in their locked gym
lockers. Students must also remove all belongings (including lock) from the
locker room after each class. Nothing should be left in the locker room
overnight.

*	All students are required to bring their Agenda Books to class every
day; it should be left in the locker room until requested by the teacher.
Parents should monitor their child’s Agenda Book on a regular basis.

*	If a student situation requires that an agenda book be signed, it is
that student’s responsibility to bring the agenda to the instructor for a
signature.

*	Any student not participating in class who does not have a proper
excuse will be required to complete a non-participant report and bring
his/her Agenda Book to class. Failure to complete the non-participant
report
in an acceptable fashion will result in the student losing additional points
against his/her daily grade.

*	If a parent requires more information about a student’s progress
other than the three trimester grades or progress reports, they should
contact
the instructor at the school.

*	If a class meets Period 5, then the student should also bring an SSR
Book to class. If s/he does not, the student will not earn participation
credit.

*	No glass containers of any type should be brought into the locker
room.

*	If a student reports to class chewing gum, s/he will be considered
unprepared for class.

CLASS PARTICIPATION:

*	Each student will be subjectively evaluated after each class based
on
how well they worked towards accomplishing the day’s objectives.

*	Students will not earn Class Participation credit if they violate
safety procedures, are disruptive, uncooperative, off-task, or are not
prepared for class on that particular day.

*	All instructors maintain an open grade book policy so that students
can monitor their progress daily (either before or after class).

REFLECTIVE WRITING ACTIVITIES:

*	Once each trimester, the students will be asked to
reflect in writing, on things that occur in class.

*	These written responses will be looked at by the instructor
primarily
for content and insight.

*	These written responses will then be evaluated by the instructor.

* Each reflective writing assignment is worth 10 points toward the
student's trimester grade.
