"It is my pleasure to be able to share my passion for aesthetics and ideas
with the children of Horace Porter School. I hope to show them the excitement
and the fulfillment that comes with exploration, discovery and knowledge via
the visual arts.
My approach to teaching involves helping children find connections to their
world and to other academic/related arts areas through painting, drawing,
sculpture and crafts. I believe that students can find purpose and meaning
through the arts."
My primary aims in the elementary visual arts classes are to facilitate
PARTICIPATION and mutual RESPECT. Skills are important, but at this age, some
students feel intimidated by lack of experience. Therefore, it is key that we
encourage each other with positive comments(RESPECT), so that all students
feel confident and comfortable enough to try new things(PARTICIPATE). This
will enable them to learn new skills, to grow their imaginations and to
cultivate their own unique ways of expressing themselves!
I use a Discipline-Based approach to the study of art; Students experience
art history, art production, art appreciation/criticism and aesthetics in
class. They analyze, describe, interpret and judge artwork through class
critiques of their own artwork and by examining prints of various
contemporary and traditional artists.
