About The Teacher

This is the start of my fourth year teaching Kindergarten at Horace W. Porter
School. Prior to this I had ten years experience teaching in Vernon. My first
5 years I taught double session half day kindergarten, then 4 years in second
grade, only to return to kindergarten to teach a full day program (lots of
fun!). I truly enjoy working with children everyday and helping them to
continuously experience learning new things, building on the experiences of
the day before.
For those of you who may not know, I attended Horace W. Porter School
(quite some time ago, hint: under Principal Leo Neckermann) and I'm almost
positive I was a kindergartner in the very classroom I now teach in....it's
a really neat feeling! There were a couple of Horace W. Porter School
teachers that I know for a fact strongly influenced me to become a teacher
myself: Mrs. Russell and Mr. Haberern(I know some of you parents also
attended Porter long ago and probably remember these two wonderful teachers
too!). Of course coming from a family where both of my parents were
certified teachers and my father went on to be a vice principal at a school
in Hartford for nearly thirty years must have been a factor too!
I currently reside in Columbia with my husband Shawn and our three 9-year
old children: Sarah, Kathryn and Michael. There was a time prior to having
children that I had lots of free time, though it's hard to remember! At
this time I enjoyed playing recreational golf and tennis and took some adult
education classes in quilting. I am proud to say that after making one
small wall-hanging piece, I went on to make a very beautiful and detailed,
hand sewn queen-size quilt. Second to teaching, I have a passion for taking
pictures to capture the important moments of people around me. I am a
faithful Red Sox fan, and wear their logo proudly, even in the worst of
times. I also enjoy rooting for the UCONN basketball teams. I don't have a
personal claim to fame(I'm not much for the spotlight moments), except for
being my kids'mom. I do,however, have a famous brother named "Mark The Shark"
from 96.5TICFM and NBC30 News,a Horace W.Porter School graduate too!
I am very excited to have this opportunity to extend my experiences and
my joy for teaching in my very own community. I look forward to working with
you and your child this year and watching them grow ~ as I tell the children
nearly every day at school, I'm the luckiest teacher to have the best
students in my class! I am also surround by an awesome and caring
group of professionals : Janna Traber (Kinderarten teacher),Donna
Cawley(Speech and Language), Barbara Coviello (Pre-K and Special Education),
Sue Hogan(P.T.) and Tirza Roda(O.T.) and many outstanding teacher assistants:
Diane Nolette (our classroom) and Carol Ritchie (in Mrs. Traber's classroom).

Mission For The Class

Our classroom will be a safe and respectful environment where students can
work together cooperatively and learn to accept each other and see that each
individual can contribute. I will make learning natural and fun while
supporting each child's academic and personal skills. I will build
confidence in each child so they may reach their own personal best potential.
