Welcome to Grade 5 announcements:
June, 2012
While the end of the school year is getting closer we have one more special
day for the students: FIELD DAY! Field Day will be held on Friday, June 1,
2012. Students will be given colored wrist bands to designate a group for
the team events. Please provide your child with water. Sunscreen and a hat
are important too!

Students enjoyed the role playing court scene at the Old State House in
Hartford. The Room of Oddities was also a big hit! The oddities inculded
many rare insects and mammals.
Period 2 students only will have a test on Wednesday, May 16th.
April, 2012
So much happening in 5th grade. A field trip to Hartford will take place on
Friday, May 4th. D.A.R.E continues each Tuesday. In math students have been
introduced to the Four Fours Project. Manipulation of the number 4 is taking
place so that students can solve problems 1-100!
March, 2012
D.A.R.E is beginning tomorrow March 27th! Classes will continue on
Tuesdays through May 22nd. D.A.R.E will be presented as a decision making
model to help students make better choices. Students will discuss the
ability to define the problem that they may encounter; assess their choices;
respond to information gathered; and evaluate if a good choice has been made.
A math test will be given on Wednesday, April 4th. Students can study for
this test by practicing long division (example: 372 divided by 9). Also the
homework that is assigned this week, Practice Test # 1-15, mirror the types
of questions that can be found on the test. Students will be working on these
types of questions in class to become familiar with the vocabulary as well as
computation needed to solve problems.
Also, you may want to view the Parent Information Topic 4 link for more
examples of items that may appear on the test.
March 19, 2012
CMT sessions are complete! Students are back to a regular schedule. Check

Students have finished the math portion of the CMT. This week they will be
working on the Reading, Language Arts, and Science portions. Continue to
make sure that your child gets to bed early and has a good breakfast!
Morning snack is working very well. Students enjoy a quick snack before the
testing begins.
March 1, 2012
Mrs. Gwinnell, our new assistant principal, visited the 5th grade students
today! She explained to students that the CMTs will begin on Monday, March
5th. Her message was simple: eating a good breakfast, getting to bed early,
and arriving to school on time would allow students to do their best on
testing days. Students will also be allowed to have a quick snack before
they take a test.
February 22, 2012
Students will have a short test on February 28th. Information concerning
topics to be covered (fractions, geometry) is in the math Learning Journal.

Students are working hard on a CMT review. This week we will review Venn
Diagrams ranging from "easy" to "what a challenge". In addition lessons with
coordinate grids will take place. Time to get out the Battleship game!
We have just about mastered writing multiplication story problems and will
move on the division story problems.

If we feel that a conference with your child is warranted, then you will be
contacted. However, if you would still like to schedule a conference, then
please email your child's homeroom teacher. Homeroom teachers will gather
information from the academic areas concerning your child and present it at

A note about the Thursday Paper manila envelope that will come home with
your child/children:
The Thursday envelope is a tool to enhance communication with parents. Each
Thursday your child/children will bring home this envelope that might be
filled with newsletters from the teachers, grade level, school, and PTO. If
you have signed up for electonic communication these items will be sent
electronically.
The Thursday envelope will also contain corrected homework and daily work, as
well as results of various assessments.
We hope that each week you will look forward to emptying this envelope and
reviewing the information with your child/children. Please help your
child/children remember to return the empty envelope to school each Friday!
Though we did have a late start to the school year, the students have made a
wonderful transition to the middle school!
