Homework

Students in 2nd grade are expected to spend about 15 minutes per day on
homework. Your child will use his/her agenda every day to keep track of homework
assignments. Homework will be sent to reinforce skills that have been taught in school.
Though I will always go over the homework with the class, questions may arise once the
student gets home and sits down to do the assignment. Our morning always starts with
a review of homework. Your child will receive credit for homework as long as he/she has
made an effort. Some students enjoy extending an activity and choose to spend more
time. This is always to be encouraged. Sometimes a student may find an activity too
difficult or confusing. To avoid frustration, please allow your child to stop trying if at
least 15 minutes of time and effort have been spent. A parent signature and/or an
explanation of the problem written on the troublesome paper or in the child's agenda
will let me know that the skill needs to be retaught.

This is a copy of the letter sent home.

September 14, 2011

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Your child has been busy at school learning many classroom and school procedures. Learning these
well will help future academics proceed smoothly. Some of these procedures include: morning
check-in, cubbie organization, proper use of classroom materials, “Morning Meeting Guidelines”,
bathroom use, and many more. Establishing good homework procedures is also important.
You may be wondering about homework for your second grade child. We hope this letter will answer
some of your questions. Our homework plan will begin on September 26th. We will use the time
between now and then to help your child practice using her/his agenda and understand how
homework should be. While learning to use the agenda your child should develop the habit of
cleaning out her/his folder each day so it does not become a collection bin. There will often be a
math paper that was done that day at school. Please look for the Home Connection on the bottom of
the first page.
Homework should take about 15 minutes. We will usually follow this homework schedule:
Monday – Reading: Each student will have a bag of “Good Fit” books in her/his schoolbag. We
encourage reading these “Good Fit” books every day, but this day it’s a must. More directions for
expectations will be included in the book bag.
Tuesday – Journal writing: Topics may be assigned and sometimes your child will be able to choose a
topic. We encourage you to write a response to your child about his/her writing.
Wednesday – Math: Work will include practice worksheets, studying facts and use of the Home
Connection on the daily math booklets.
Thursday – Spelling and Poetry: Directions for poetry will be included in the binder. This signed and
dated binder will be returned to school on Friday or the following Monday.
Please be aware that occasionally we will abandon this schedule for days to be spent reviewing
science or social studies units for a test or for special assignments.
We hope this letter will be helpful to understanding your child’s homework responsibilities. Please
sign his/her agenda to let us know you have received this letter. Feel free to ask any questions you
might have by writing them in the agenda.
Your support at home for this important daily practice is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,

Mrs. Dibala and Ms. Zaglio
