Who can participate?
· Students in Grades 5-8 who are elected by their classmates.
· We are looking for dynamic, enthusiastic, and committed Middle Schoolers to join the Student Council for this year. Qualities necessary for members of the Student Council include the following:
Leadership Skills – you will lead committees and be a representative for your class.
Creative- you will be asked to think of new and exciting activities and fund raisers for
the Student Council.
Communicative – you will share ideas with other Student Council members, classmates
and other middle school students.
Team Player – you will be working with a team to generate ideas and organize events
for the Student Council.
Responsible – you will be asked to help run various activities throughout the school.
Committed – you will be expected to come to all meetings throughout the school year.
Meetings will be held twice a month on Tuesdays after school. If this does not fit into your schedule, please see Ms. Guzman before seeking election.
Who are the members of the Student Council?
*8th Grade Officers*
President:
Keeps the order of the student organization, encourages officers, members, and students to take on leadership roles to improve the quality of our school’s culture and community, is responsible for chairing meetings, has strong communication skills.
Vice President:
Should be familiar with all activities of the Student Council and prepared to step into the President’s role, if needed.
Secretary:
Is responsible for recording meeting minutes.
Treasurer:
Is responsible for bookkeeping and keeping track of money for the student council
*Grades 5-8*
Middle School Homeroom Representatives: Representatives attend all meetings and voice matters of interest to Horace Porter students. They also carry back important information to each homeroom.
How do you run for Student Council?
- You must write a one page, double spaced essay stating the position you are seeking and the reason you would like to be on the Student Council.
- You must have five teacher signatures. These teachers must attest to your character as a student.
- Parents and student must sign an agreement that the student will attend all meetings held after school.
- All above requirements must be submitted to Ms. Guzman by October 5, 2011
- 8th Grade Officers must participate in student elections during the month of October.
- Further instructions will be given after all requirements have been submitted to Ms. Guzman.
