Why study French?
In the 16th and 17th centuries, French replaced Latin as a common language for international and especially diplomatic communication in Europe. It continues to be used for that purpose. It is one of the working languages of the Secretariat of the United Nations.
Did You Know?
There are quite a few words that have been taken from English and are spelled the same in French. Some examples are: ticket, camping, sandwich, hockey, surfing, weekend, automobile, super, terrible, t-shirt, jean, short.
There are also English words that have been taken from French. Some examples are: hors d'oeuvre, maître d', julienne, coup d' état, coup de grasse, faux-pas, television, most ballet terms, Répondez s'il vous plaît (RSVP)
French is the language not only spoken by the people of France but is spoken in over 45 other countries. Some include Belgium, Switzerland, Quebec, Tahiti, French Polynesian Islands, Haiti, French Antilles, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Corsica, Laos, Vietnam, and over 25 countries in Africa including Madagascar and Morocco.
What can I do with French?
Jobs abound if you know the French language. Some include: advertising, animators, business majors for perfume companies, wine companies, cartoonists, diplomats, fashion designers, graphic designers, importers/exporters, interpreters, international lawyers, museum curators, Peace Corps volunteers, teachers, translators, and travel guides.
Where can I work?
There are many companies and businesses looking for people who can speak French. The Bic Corporation (formally headquartered here in Milford), Subway Corporation (headquartered in Milford and Quebec), Euro-Disney, Disney corporation, Ralph Lauren, Loréal, Pierre Cardin, Givenchy, Yves St. Laurent, Aéropostale, Adidas, Perrier, Evian, Canon France, Tupperware, and Xerox.
