A Message from the Principal

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the second semester! As you probably remember from your time in high school, students use this new beginning to vow to do better. I remember those times in high school when I would think things like, “This time I am going to set aside more time for homework,” or, “I will start my big projects much earlier this semester.” Many students set these types of goals and meet them with success. Other students fail to meet these very realistic goals simply because they do not share them with their friends, family, or teachers in a way that garners support or creates a concrete plan of action.

I have learned a great deal this first semester and I want to thank everyone for their kindness and generosity in sharing their insight on how we can make Jonathan Law a Center of Excellence. I have been able to spend a lot of time in classrooms and I continue to be impressed by the dedication and commitment of our faculty and staff to the success of our students. All of us at Jonathan Law are committed to the belief that all students can learn and how we teach over time has changed significantly as a result.

Since the beginning of public high schools, the world has undergone substantial change—two world wars, a cold war, air and space travel, and unbelievable leaps in technology have changed every aspect of our daily lives. The job market is also substantially different. The Internet has made the job market and economy truly global in nature. In order to enter today’s job market and be competitive, compared to a century ago, it is not only essential to earn a high school diploma but also imperative for students to attain post-secondary training. As I watch the world evolve it is apparent to me that high schools too are slowly evolving into very different institutions than when I was in high school or even from when I first started teaching. Given what we have learned about teaching and learning over the last four decades and the changes in our world over the last century, there really isn’t a choice. Now more than ever, it is imperative for all of our students to graduate. As our system of teaching evolves, student performance and graduation rates will improve also.

For those of us who graduated decades ago, our experience with school is not necessarily what our kids should be experiencing today. The modern challenges and mandates that schools, communities, and countries face are very different now compared to then.

Please know that the JLHS staff is seriously looking for proven methods that increase student performance and the staff here will continue with our goal of constant improvement of our teaching and the learning of our students.

I encourage you to stay in contact with the staff, continue to monitor your child’s progress, and stay connected to the daily life of the students at Jonathan Law. Now more than ever, your support at home of the work we do here is imperative for our school to continue moving forward. The dedicated staff here understands that parents are the extension of the classroom teacher at home and we sincerely appreciate all you do to assist and support us to achieve our vision for the future.

Here’s to a great second semester!

Sincerely,
Fran Thompson
