Homework Overview

Please check your child's take home folder nightly. All important notices and
corrected work should be placed in this folder.

READING

Reading is a NIGHTLY homework assignment.
Children should read for at least 15 minutes each night.
Books assigned should be at the student's independent level.
Students should not need a lot of assistance decoding words at an
independent level. A Reading Log will be kept in your child's take home
folder. Please be sure to complete this log each day.

Parents should monitor reading. Parents can help develop
comprehension skills by asking questions and talking about what the
child has read. This will let the child know that reading is an interactive
process. It will also let them know that the purpose of reading is to find
out what the author wanted to tell them and not just to call out the words.
Try to encourage your child to make connections in his/her life to the text
he/she is reading. (What does the story remind you of?, Has anything
like that ever happened to you?, etc.)

MATH

There should be a homework math page assigned Mondays through
Thursdays. This sheet will be a review of the daily lesson. If a homework
page has not been assigned, it is usually due to a lack of understanding
by a great number of students. I will not send home a homework
assignment until the children demonstrate an understanding of the
concept being taught. The skill will be re-taught / re-explained the
following day. Thankfully, this is a rare occurrence. In the event that a
homework page has not been assigned, please play one of the Math
Investigations games found in the back of the student handbook distributed at
the September Open House. Your child should be familiar with the games that
have been introduced to date. These games are used often during our math
workshop.
Please review the in-class sheet that has been returned to your child
and ask about its content. Review and discuss the homework
assignment with your child to further develop your child's understanding
of the math concept.
Please be sure to practice math addition and subtraction combinations(facts)
to 12 (once mastered move up to 20) with your child at least 3 times per
week. This is also a great activity when no written homework sheet has been
assigned. All second graders will be expected to have mastered combinations
to 20 by the end of the school year.

FUNDATIONS

Three to four times per week your child will be coming home with a follow-up
activity from our Fundations lessons. Fundations is the literacy program used
to increase phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary and fluency. A word list
will be provided from the 1st grade program for at home review. Students
should be able to spell all the words on the grade 1 list. The level 2 words
will be provided throughout the year and students will be responsible for the
accurate spelling of these words as they are introduced. Transfer of these
skills to all reading and writing activities is the goal.
