How can I help my child become a better reader?

You can help by reading together each day.  As you read, discuss the story and
take turns asking each other questions about what you have read.  Discuss the
characters and the events in the story.

My child can read the words, but he doesn't understand what he reads?

Although decoding is an important skill in learning to read, the goal of
reading  is to gain meaning from the text.  It is important that children make
connections to what they are reading and form questions based on what they
have read.  From an early age, children need guidance in understanding what
they are reading. Parents can help by asking who, what, where, and why questions.

How can I find books that my children will enjoy?

Talk to your child about his/her interests, then put aside some time to spend
at the public library or a local bookstore.  Give your child some time to
preview the book to see if he is comfortable with it. Remember children should
