What should I do if my child is absent?
If your child is absent please call the school and let the nurse
know why your child is absent. It is important we know what germs and
illnesses are going around the school. Homework may be requested. If homework
is requested it will be in the office after 2:45 pm. Some class
work may have to be made up as well.
How will I be made aware of my child's behavior in school?
As necessary, your child will receive a making better choices
slip or an oops slip. These notes will have comments about your child's behavior and or missing or incomplete
assignments on it. The note must come back to school and be
signed by a parent or guardian the next day. The children are
held accountable for this.
Can I send birthday invitations to school?
Invitations may be sent to school as long as everyone in the
class will be receiving one; or if a boy is having a party and all the boys are
invited and vice versa for girls. The students are not permitted to pass
out invitations to children in other clasrooms. Those invitations
will have to be mailed.
How are birthday's celebrated in room 32?
Room 32 biirthday celebrations are short and sweet.
Your child will receive a birthday crown to wear with his/her name
on it and we will sing happy birthday. We are a no food school so please
do not send in cupcakes or any food. Please do NOT send in goody bags
for the class. Children are not allowed to go from room to room to pass out
treats or invitations to other students or teachers.
What is the best way to contact you?
I always check for notes each day; so that would be the most
convenient. I try my best to respond that day. I also check my e-mail each day
but sometimes it's at 8:00am or 6:00pm depending on how the day goes.
I will respond as soon as possible. You can also call the school and
leave a message but it is not likely I will contact you until the afternoon or
early evening. For obvious reasons I can not come to the phone during
the day.
What is the good worker jar?
The good worker jar is used for positive reinforcement. If the
class receives a compliment, a student gets a compliment for working
hard, doing something well, being courteous or helpful to another peer they
will be recommended for the good worker jar. The child will write
his/her name on a slip of paper and put it into the jar. There is no limit to how
many times you can put your name into the jar. On Friday's I choose 2 names
from the good worker jar. The children that are chosen may pick a prize
from the treasure chest.
Do you celebrate the holidays?
YES! I love celebrating the holdays, and any holiday at that.
If your family has a special holiday tradition they would like to share
with the class please let me know. I encourage discussions of different
holidays so that the children will have some knowledge of other cultures and
traditions. Please notify me of any conflicts you may have regarding these
discussions.
What's a Rockin' Reader?
A Rockin' Reader is a person, Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt,
Uncle, family friend, neighbor, etc., who comes into the classroom to read to
the students for about 20 minutes on a designated day. Some readers are
interested in doing and craft or having a special treat to go along with the
book they've read. That is perfectly acceptable, I just need advanced
notice. Please be certain to bring in your OWN books to read.
Does Room 32 have a daily snack?
Yes we do. Snack is about 15 minutes. The children should have something SMALL and HEALTHY to eat. Please do NOT send cookies,
candy, chocolate, chips, etc. One drink and one snack will do,
especially since I KNOW everyone ate a good healthy breakfast. :) (Hint, Hint)
What does my child need for specialist?
Music, nothing; Art, the children may be painting, using clay and
or markers. If you are concerned about them getting their clothes
ruined it is best to send them to school wearing something "old"; Library,
the children MUST remember their library books. They are not allowed to take
out new books before returing the old ones. If your child forgets their
books they can put books on hold and bring in the old ones the next day.
Gym, everyone MUST wear sneakers to participate. Ladies should not wear skirts
or dresses on GYM day.
When I volunteer can I bring a young child?
Please do not bring in siblings or yournger children when you
come to volunteer ( Reading, classroom celebrations, etc.). I am certain
that your other children are well behaved, however, the younger children
become a distraction and it is unfair to the Room 32 students.
What are Math Groups?
Math groups is how math is taught in room 32.
The children are divided into 3 groups of 5-7 children based on their
strengths and weaknesses, similar to reading groups. Math class lasts for
approximately 1 hour. During that time the children meet with Ms. Wayne for a 15-
20 minute math mini-lesson, then move to the computer center to complete
SME for 15-20 minutes and then move to a math center for 15-20 minutes, guided
by another adult or teacher or working independently, to practice the skill
they were taught that day or a skill from a previous math lesson.
Why does my child have different work than another child in the class?
Every child learns differently. Therefore, the skill practice
sheets, homework and method of instruction will differ with each child.
While all the children will be learning the same thing (the objective is
the same for everyone) their work will be different.
