REMINDER...

Please come visit the chicks tomorrow, Thursday, between 3:45 and 4:30 in room 32!  They're adorable!  So far two have hatched, one has a small crack in it and two others are "rocking" back and forth...I can't wait to see what will happen!

Also, we have picked our play parts and started practicing.  I was trying to save some trees by having only one copy of the play per child for them to bring back and forth BUT, that plan is not working!  So, now the children have a copy for school and one to keep at home or in their yellow folder.  Please encourage your child to practice the songs, poems and his/her lines each night.

Here is the news for this week...

~We will continue unit 12 in Fundations.  This unit focuses on adding the suffix -es to basewords with closed syllables.  We will work on the concept of plural words.  Please refer to the fundations pack that was sent home last Monday and the fundations page on this site.

~Im math we are working on SUBTRACTION facts within 10. We are working on unit 8 in math investigations.  The focus for Unit 8 is counting, identifying and writing numbers up to 120; adding and subtracting, counting by 2's, 4's, 5's and 10's.    Please refer to the Math Investigations page for more information and to the weekly homework sheet sent home today. In addition, please encourage your child to practice their addition and subtraction facts.  You can use the math magician site to do this or make/buy flash cards to practice.  Start with +0, +1 and +2.  Remember we are working on automaticity.  So, it is important that the children answer the facts quickly and accurately.   If you click on the "Links" link on the site of this page it will take you to a page with my list of websites.  The Addition Flashcards site, known to the students as Math Magician will help with mastering addition facts.  I recommend the students begin with +0 and +1 facts.  They should practice this until mastery which means they score 100% within the minute.  Before the children move on to +2, etc. they should try to beat their time on the +0 and +1 facts.  Remember the goal is to build fluency with facts.  First graders are responsible for: plus 1 facts, plus 2 facts, doubles combinations and combinations of 10.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

~We are working hard in Writer's Workshop.  The children have begun writing non fiction books.  They are very eager writers!

OLD NEWS...

~Reading logs are important and a HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT!  Your child should be reading every night and you must write it on the reading log.  This is the only way for me to be sure your child is reading at home.  Please make sure you or your child is recording the nightly reading on the reading log.  It gets checked each day and is a homework assignment.

~Please check the PTA page on the Mathewson school site for important information that gets sent home.  Remember, you will NOT receive paper copies of notices so you must check the site weekly.  Please let me know if you need the code to access that page.

~If you have a reusable water bottle at home (like the one your child received for the bulldog pumpkin run)  feel free to allow your child to bring it to school each day.  This reduces trips to the water fountain and keeps the children hydrated.

~I try to make the newsflashes as informative as possible but if you are unclear about anything or have any questions about something I did not address in the newsflash or on the class website please let me know.  The FAQ (frequently asked questions) page may be helpful to you as well. I appreciate your at home support and any feedback you might have to help with home/school communication.
~All Friday folder information is now electronic unless you requested a paper copy. Therefore, you will not receive a blue folder on Friday's unless you requested it or there is something that has not been scanned to the website.  Please refer to the PTA pages and Friday folder page on the school website each week for important notices.  If you need the code to access the page please let me know.
~ We have gym on Monday's so it is important that the children WEAR SNEAKERS.  Ladies should try to remember not to wear dresses or skirts on gym day.

Have a wonderful week!
Hugs & love,
Ms. Wayne
