 Homework for the week of August 31
1. Due Tuesday, 9/1: Please completely and neatly fill out the Student 
Profile form. Check with your parents for assistance. Also, please get an 
appropriate SSR book. You should get a book that you can use for your 1st 
Independent Reading book.
2. Due Wed. 9/2: Begin reading your independent reading book. You need to 
read for at least 1/2 an hour to fulfil English homework requirements. 
Period 
6: please read both sides of the sheet on Suzanne Collins and CATCHING FIRE.
3. Due Thurs. 9/3: ALL CLASSES: Turn in your summer reading book forms. You 
will be given an overall grade based on neatness, completeness and overall 
effort. Additionall, please bring in materials for our class activity. 
4. Due Tues. 9/8: The class activity will be due. Remember to have your 
rubric as well. Continue reading your Independent Reading book. We will be 
reviewing the record sheets and the Independent Reading requirements next 
Tuesday.

HOMEWORK FOR THE WEEK OF 9/8
1. Due Wed. 9/9: Continue to review the handouts from class today. Closely 
look over the Independent Reading Record Sheets for fiction and nonfiction 
books. Period 6: Due Thurs. 9/9: Fill out the fiction form for THE HUNGER 
GAMES. We will be discussing your responses in class. The due dates for the 
forms for the quarter are listed on the Announcement link. 
2. Due Thurs. 9/10: Please read in your Independent Reading book for 30 
minutes. REMEMBER BOX OF KLEENEX AND BOSTON FORMS AND $$$$ TO HOMEROOM. 
3. Due Mon. 9/14: Begin working on your first book form. Remember to delete 
out any blank white space. The first form will be due Fri. 9/18, and the 
forms are now on my website under Handouts.

Period 6: finish THE HUNGER GAMES theme chart in Writer's Notebook.
2. Due Wed. 9/16: PERIODS 1/4/7: Using the graphic organizer prvided or your 
writer's notebook, outline the Harris Burdick short story.
                  PERIOD 6: Using the graphic organizer or your writer's 
notebook, outline the $5.00 bill story. Also, add DYSTOPIA AND ISOLATION to 
your Hunger Games chart and fill in.
3. PERIOD 6--Due Thurs. 9/17: Please type up two well-developed paragraphs 
in 
which you describe your utopia and your dystopia. What would be the best 
possible world/environment for you to live in? What would be the worst 
possible world/environment for you to live in? (For example, Ms. Scott's 
utopia would be a house on the beach on Block Island with sand on the 
floors, 
an endless supply of novels by her favorite authors, many pairs of flip-
flops, a pale blue Bug convertible, a cupboard full of Easy Mac 'n' Cheese 
and the Red Sox winning the World Series every year! Utopia, right???)    
4.Due Mon. 9/21--all classes: The rough draft of your baseline writing piece 
is due. The rough draft MUST BE TYPED AND DOUBLE-SPACED for peer-editing.

1. Due Wed. 9/30: Please bring in an OLD towel or a black garbage bag to sit 
on when we go outside. You MUST have something to sit on or you won't 
participate--also, please wear appropriate clothing suitable for sitting on 
the grass.
ALSO DUE WED. 9/30: Please journal for 1/2 hour IN YOUR WRITER'S NOTEBOOK 
about an experience you had while being outside in Nature. You may use one 
of 
the suggestion below or come up with one of your own:

Taking a long walk on the beach
Hiking in the woods-or camping

2. Due Thurs. 10/1: Please journal IN YOUR WRITER'S NOTEBOOK FOR 1/2 HOUR as 
you sit outside and absorb the evening around you. Avoid commenting on 
manmade sounds or any modern noises; instead, focus on the natural world 
around you. You must do this assignment during twilight or nighttime in 
order 
for your senses to pick up all that is around you... 
3. Due Fri. 10/2: The next Reading Record Sheet turn in date is today. 
Please 
bring a pen or pencil and an SSR book to class.
4. Due Mon. 10/5: Journal for 1/2 hour in your writer's notebook about 
retracing Thoreau's footsteps. The prompt is the second bullet point on the

3. Due Thurs. 10/8: Read and highlight Emerson's "Self-Reliance." Write down 
three quotations that resonate with you and explain in your writier's 
notebook. Your explanations should be elaborated!!
4. Due Fri. 10/9: Read and highlight Thoreau's bio. Write down 5 important 
facts in your writer's notebook. Read WALDEN. Highlight 3 quotations that 
resonate with you.

THE BLUE BOOK.

full four hours-either in one block of time or in two blocks of two hours

the Transcendental Portfolio rubric that you received in class. Be sure you 
understand all the criteria and how you will be assessed.
2. Due Wed. 10/28: The second journal entry is due--TYPED, DOUBLE-SPACED. 
Bring supplies to class to design your cover. Look at the portfolio 
guidelines sheet for cover requirements.
3. Due Thurs. 10/29: The third journal entry will be due--MUST BE TYPED. 
Bring all elements of portfolio to class as you will be using a Peer 
Checklist to insure that you have met all the requirements.
4. Due Fri. 10/30: Transcendental Portfolio and PEER EDITING/REVISION 
CHECKLIST. Put the rubric on top.

1. Due Wed. 11/4: Please completely complete the "Who is William 
Shakespeare" 
handout and the "Shakespeare's London" handout. You may bullet point the 
facts, and you MUST ELABORATE on the questions that ask you to explain your 
position.
2. Due Thurs. 11/5: Please complete the handout on the Globe Theater--BOTH 
SIDES. You should elaborate where necessary.
3. Due Mon. 11/9: Complete "What Do I Believe" questions. Then, the two 
statements must be typed, 12 font, double-spaced, ONE FULL PAGE EACH. Follow 
the directions on the bottom of the page. Please do not define what the 
statement means. Please type the statement at the top of the page.*****Also, 
make sure to add your "What Is Love" statement from the point of view from a 
4-8 year-old kid. Add it to either statement essay.

1. Due Wed. 11/11: Please set up 22 index cards for the drama terms. The 
term should go on the front with the definition on the back. The terms are 
located in the back of the Shakespeare packet.  You are to handwrite the 
index cards UNLESS i HAVE PERSONALLY SPOKEN TO YOU. There will be a test on 
these terms; please study them each night.

2. Due Thurs. 11/12: 1.Study the drama terms 2. Finish the prereading-plot 
summary handout for MSND 3. Finish pgs. 5-13 of the introduction to MSND--be

COMPLETELY answer the questions.
3. Due Fri. 11/20: Independent Reading Record sheet #1 due---make sure you 
have text support for ALL questions that require text support or text 
evidence. Simply listing a page number does not count. Please look over the 
helpful hints guide. 
4. Due Mon. 11/23: Please read all of ACT THREE. Be sure to read the 
prereading summary before you begin the ACT in the book.

1.Due Tues. 12/1: Finish Act Four and the corresponding Lit Notes. Be careful 
to use text support and cite the lines!!!
2.Due Wed. 12/2: Please read ACT FIVE. Pay close attention to lines 384-421--
the closing speeches from Oberon and Puck. IN A PARAGRAPH FOR EACH ACTOR, 
summarize what their lines mean in terms of the overall play. You may write 
these paragraphs in your writer's notebook. 
3. Due Thurs. 12/3: Pretend you are a theater critic for THE NEW YORK TIMES. 
In 3/4 of a page in your writer's notebook, review the play MSND. Likes? 
Dislikes? Would you recommend the play (to read or to see) to a friend? 
Should it be taught in 8th grade? Are there "modern day" situations in this 
play even though it's over 400 years old?  Do not use any "swear words" in 
your write 
up.
4. Due Fri. 12/4: Advanced has a RRS due. On-level: you should be reading 
your book as you have a RRS due Fri. 12/11.
