The presentations will continue on Thursday. Please be certain to use no
English in your movie or Power Point. There should, in fact, be no writing of
any kind on your Power Point, as you will do the narrating “live” in class.
Movies should be burned onto a DVD so that they may be swiftly shown in
class. Power Points may be on a flash drive which we may quickly bring up and
watch. Please practice what you are going to say, and design your Power
Point so that the pictures will provide obvious “clues.” We look forward to
enjoying some creative and entertaining movies and Power Point presentations
which give you an opportunity to show how much Spanish you have learned.
4. jueves (para entregar el viernes)
The verb DECIR may be the most important verb of all, and yet Chapter 6 only
uses it in passing. DECIR (to say, or to tell) is conjugated thusly: Yo digo,
tú dices, usted dice, él/ella dice, nosotros decimos, ustedes dicen,
ellos/ellas dicen. What does your grandma tell you that you ought to do? Mi
abuelita dice que yo debo hacer mandados para mi familia. Please write ten
sentences which use DECIR + QUE (says that/say that) to tell us what various
people say or tell you. EXAMPLE: El profesor dice que debo hablar más español
y menos inglés. La Dra. Boccanfuso dice que debemos ser bondadosos. Mis
abuelitos dicen que soy buena persona.

1. lunes (para entregar el martes)
We know that our town, Darien, takes its name from the Province of Darién, in
the rainforest of Panamá – and that El Darién literally connects North and
South America. How are the kids here in Darien similar to those in Darién?
How are they different? What household chores might a good, helpful Darien
student do to help the family? What sorts of chores might a young person in
the Darién rainforest do to help the family? Please write a brief
composition, consisting of at least ten thoughtfully-worded sentences, in
which you compare and contrast and speculate as to how kids in the two
Dariens are alike and are different. (Green Team students should directly
refer to things learned by studying the display case near our library.)
2.. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
We all do things we like to do, but we also know that there are other things
we really ought to do, but don’t. We may watch TV at night, when we really
should do the dishes or clean the kitchen. We may play baseball or
flickerball outside before our evening meal, but we really ought to be
setting the table. Please write a minimum of ten sentences, telling what we,
our brothers and sisters, and our pals do at home…and what we or they really
ought to do to help our families. EXAMPLE: Yo lucho con mi hermano en el
pasto, pero yo debo cortar el césped. María mira televisión y come papitas
todo el día, pero debe planchar la ropa. Mi hermana y yo vamos de compras los
sábados, pero debemos pasar la aspiradora para ayudar a nuestra mamá.
3. miércoles (para entregar el viernes)
Please work on your Chapter 6 project, following the guidelines and seeking
the best ways to illustrate the extent of your learning during the past
month. It is our hope that you will really enjoy this project, and this
chance to apply what you have learned to a creative activity. Please follow
the rubric and check for accuracy at each point along the way. Thank you!

Please write out the final draft of your letter to post on our Darien a
Darién blog, following the rubric cautiously and using your textbook and your
binder resources to be certain you have eliminated all errors. Since this
assignment will yield a quiz grade, with points deducted for errors, it is
wise to carefully use all your resources and stick to the material we are
learning in class, rather than to try to write things we have not yet
studied. Once your final draft has been approved by your teacher, you may
post it on our blog. Thank you.
2. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
Please use your GUSTAR/ENCANTAR resources to write ten good, thoughtfully-
designed sentences which tell us what you, your family members, and your pals
like, and what you like to do. Please explore the language and write longer
sentences.
EXAMPLE: A mi hermana le gusta salir a la playa con sus amigas cuando hace
sol, para nadar y también para charlar con todo el mundo. A mis amigos y a
mí nos gustan las cerezas. A mis abuelitos les encanta viajar durante el
invierno. A ti te gusta mucho pelear con bolas de nieve, ¿no es verdad?
3. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
Please use your conjugation sheets and your listing of household chores to
write a short composition – consisting of a minimum of ten sentences –
telling us what you, your family members, and some of your classmates do to
help out around the house. Please be certain to conjugate the verbs
accurately, depending upon the person doing the action. EXAMPLE: Yo siempre
lavo los platos después de cenar. Juliancito pasa la aspiradora para ayudar
a su mamá. Mis hermanitos ponen la mesa y mi hermano mayor saca la basura
todas las noches.
4. jueves ( para entregar el viernes)
Please prepare for a fine quiz tomorrow on the follow subjects: A.) The
Possessive Adjectives (my, your, our, their, etc..) B.) Family
Vocabulary C.) The Personal “A” (Yo ayudo a mi abuelita) and D.) Physical
Descriptions (eye and hair color, etc.) and Salient Characteristics
(personality traits, values, etc.) These are all things we’ve worked on
every day in class, and have practiced in our blog writings. Let us see how
effectively we are learning these important concepts found in Chapter 6.

Below are some homework assignments from the past:
Español 08 Tarea 12—16 de septiembre del 2011
1. lunes (para entregar el martes)
Please read the “Nota Gramatical” on Page 160 of your textbook, and notice
that the verbs HACER (to
do, or to make) and SALIR (to go out) are irregular in just the “yo” form.
HACER, in the “yo” form,
becomes hago, while SALIR becomes salgo. It isn’t always easy to find
creative ways to use HACER in
the present tense, so here’s some suggestions: HACER LA TAREA, HACER MANDADOS
(to do errands),
HACER EJERCICIO (to exercise), HACER LA CAMA (to make your bed), NO HACER
NADA (to do
nothing), HACER RUIDO (to make noise), and HACER LA MALETA (to pack one’s
suitcase). Please write
five HACER sentences in the “yo” or first person singular form, and five
SALIR sentences in the “yo”
form. EXAMPLE: “Yo salgo con mi familia los domingos. No hago nada cuando
estoy muy cansado y
necesito descansar.
2. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
One of the most challenging grammatical concepts for Spanish students to
grasp is the use of the
“personal a,” which is briefly discussed on Page 161 of your textbook. When
the direct object of an
action is a person, we must use the “personal a” before the noun. For
instance, “We visit our
grandma” becomes “Visitamos a nuestra abuela,” because Grandma is a
person. “I help my friends”
becomes “Ayudo a mis amigos,” because your friends are people. “Abrazo a mi
madrina” is “I hug my
godmother,” and “Veo a la Dra. Boccanfuso” means “I see Dr. Boccanfuso.”
Please try to write ten
good sentences using the “personal a.” Thank you.
3. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
Please write a rough draft of a post for our DARIEN A DARIÉN blog. It should
be autobiographical.
What is your name (English name)? Age? What grade are you in (Estoy en el
octavo grado)? What is
your best subject? What do you look like (eye color, etc.)? How many siblings
have you? What type of
person are you (please….spare me “funny” and “athletic,” as I am about to
fall sound asleep reading
those two!!)? What is your family like? Parents or grandparents or
godparents? Please use everything
we are studying in this unit to write a good self-introduction.
4. jueves (para entregar el viernes)
Please re-write your autobiographical post, incorporating all the changes and
updates recommended.
Please write very neatly, as the approved final draft will go up on our blog
and be read in Darién,
Panamá. Please be creative, as it would be nice to have a variety on the
blog, instead of identical
mini-essays. Thank you.

1. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
Please read the Así se dice box on Page 154 of your textbook. There are two
guiding questions in this section: “¿Cuántas personas hay en tu familia?”
and “¿Cómo es tu familia?” (What’s your family like?). Please bear in mind
that descriptions of Latin American families will typically include
grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, godparents (padrinos) and others
found on your rose-colored vocabulary sheet. Please use the resources in your
binder and textbook to write a paragraph – consisting of a minimum of ten
sentences – which answer the two Así se dice questions thoroughly. EXAMPLE:
Somos once en mi familia. Mi hermanita, Florencia, tiene 8 años y es muy
cariñosa y creativa. Mi tío, Zenón, es compasivo y bondadoso, pero sus hijos
son un poco fastidiosos……
2. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
Please use your Possessive Adjectives sheet to write ten good sentences which
show us that you understand the appropriate use of these important words. For
instance, we know that “su” – in modifying a noun – can mean his, her, your
(formal), your (plural) or their. To illustrate the use of “su” to
mean “her,” we might write: “Mi hermana tiene 15 años, y mañana es su
cumpleaños.” Please use su, sus, nuestro, nuestra, nuestros, nuestras, tu,
tus, mi, mis in ten well-designed sentences – and be sure to be creative
problem-solvers as you practice using these possessive adjectives. Thank you.
3. jueves (para entregar el viernes)
What do your family members do on weekends? Which activities do you do
together? What do your cousins, grandparents, aunts and uncles typically do
on weekends? Please conjugate verbs in an appropriate manner as
you write ten sentences which tell us what happens in your family on
weekends. EXAMPLE: Los fines de semana, mi primo Juliancito anda en
patineta.
Mis hermanitos y yo visitamos a nuestra abuelita. Mis padres salen a comer en
su restaurante favorito.

1. lunes (para entregar el martes)
Please make believe that you are having a big party in your house, and ten of
your classmates have come to give you some assistance. Please use your
Chapter 10 party vocabulary, along with the imperative mode, to tell these
ten individuals to do ten different tasks to help you get ready for the big
event…in ten well-constructed sentences.
2. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
Please use each of the irregular forms of the imperative mode, either in a
sentence telling a pal to do something, or with direct and/or indirect—direct
object pronouns attached. There are ten irregulars: DECIR, IR, IRSE, SER,
PONER, PONERSE, TENER, VENIR, HACER, and SALIR. Please write a sentence or
form a complex command with attached object pronoun(s) for each of them.
3. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
Please be prepared for a brief quiz on direct object pronouns and basic forms
of the imperative tomorrow. We all know that object pronouns are used all
the time, in connection with every topic and in company with every
grammatical structure, but they fit very naturally with the imperative. Our
quiz on Thursday will deal with both the object pronouns and the informal
imperative.
4. jueves (para entregar el viernes)
Please write five “requests” to a friend (“Me haces el favor de…..” etc.) as
found on Page 266, followed immediately by five direct commands, using the
imperative mode. You are contrasting these two methods of asking that a pal

Please write a composition consisting of at least ten good sentences, in
which you tell us what you and your family members and pals did all weekend.
Please remember to change the spelling and insert a “u” to maintain the
hard “g” sound in jugar (Yo jugué) or to change the “c” to “qu” to maintain
the hard “c” sound in practicar (Yo practiqué). Please use your preterit
guide to do this assignment.
2. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
Please prepare for a pleasant quiz tomorrow on the preterit tense. You should
know how to speak about what you did last night (anoche) and what you did
last week (la semana pasada) and what you did last year (el año pasado). You
should know a few basic orthographic changes (-GAR, -CAR, -ZAR verbs in
the “yo” form).
3. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
The word “ya” can mean “already” (as well as “right now”). Please write ten
questions in the preterit tense --- about getting ready for a big party ---
and follow each one with an answer which uses a direct object pronoun. In
English, it would look like this: Did you inflate the balloons? Yes, I
already inflated them. In Spanish, it would be: ¿Inflaste los globos?
Sí, ya los inflé. EXAMPLE: ¿Compraste los refrescos para la fiesta? Sí,
ya los compré.
4. jueves (para entregar el viernes)
Tonight is VARIETY SHOW 5. Your homework is to speak Spanish with your
friends at the show. There is no written homework due to be turned in

about what happened in the past (last night, last week, earlier today, etc.)
would be very helpful.

SNOW EVENT ASSIGNMENT:
Please go to our DARIEN TO DARIÉN blog, a link to which is found on the right
side of the MMS home page.
When we post a comment on a blog, we are – in effect – publishing to the
world. We are representing ourselves, our families, our school, our
community – and, in some instances, our country. We have a responsibility to
blog with sensitivity and care.
Please write a thoughtful message in Spanish and post your poem on our blog.
You must reflect before your write. Please avoid such clichés as “hola”
or “¿cómo estás?” One should have something to say before trying to write
anything. Please reflect. Do you want to tell people in Darién, Panamá, about
our school, our weather, and our classes? Do you want to ask them questions
about living in the rainforest of Latin America?
The subject is your own….but please use your best Spanish, write a rough
draft before you get started, and make your posted comment interesting and
different, reflecting your own sincere interest to exchange ideas and
information with our new friends in Darién.

Please prepare diligently for your Chapter 8 restaurant improvisation, which
will be done in class tomorrow. By this time, you should all be able to order
a meal in a restaurant, interact with the waiter and other diners, and speak

It matters not whether you are the wait person or the guest. Everything on
the rubric applies to all participants. Enjoy showing how much you have
learned!
2. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
Please notice the “Así se dice” section on Page 216 of your textbook. You
will note that a critical customer tells a wait, “Este plato está sucio…”
(This plate is dirty!). Obviously, we shun restaurants of that caliber!
Nevertheless, LIMPIO/LIMPIA/LIMPIOS/LIMPIAS (clean) and
SUCIO/SUCIA/SUCIOS/SUCIAS (dirty) are both used with the verb ESTAR, to

Please very conscientiously practice your poem until you really know it well.
You should say the words repeatedly, until you know them extremely well –
and, at that point, you may truly begin to recite the poem expressively. Last
week, far too many people were groping for words and struggling to recall
each line. Please devote the time it takes to really learn your chosen poem.
I am here to help you, and I know you will all perform excellently, if you
will put in the required time for practice. Thank you.
2. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
Please make believe you are attending a big dinner party, and you have ten
different food items in front of you! There are samplings of two main
courses. There are three different vegetables. There are rolls, biscuits, or
popovers. There is a variety of fruit. You have rice or potatoes. You have a
beverage. There is even sherbet or ice cream being served. Please write ten
sentences using ESTAR and describing ten different foods you are in the
process of eating..and please use lots of different adjectives to describe
the foods, being certain they agree in number and gender with your nouns (the
food items). Please do not use “bien.” Thank you.
3. jueves (para entregar el viernes)
Please make believe you have five younger siblings or cousins who are dining
with you in a Latin American restaurant, while your parents are attending an
interesting International conference. You must order dinner for yourself and
for the five kids you are in charge of. Obviously, ¿Me puede traer…? becomes
¿Le puede traer…? (Can you bring her/bring him….?) or ¿Les puede traer..?
(Can you bring them….?). Please write ten sentences in which you order
typical Latin American dinners for yourself and your younger charges.
EXAMPLE: ¿Nos puede traer unos vasos de agua? ¿Les puede traer leche a

What are some typical dishes of this “restaurant?” Your composition should

keep asking the waiter to bring more (¿Me puede traer otro batido de mora?
¿Me trae más panecillos con mantequilla, por favor? ¿Nos trae otros vasos de
agua, por favor? ¿Eh? ¿Ya comí todo el arroz? Por favor, ¿me puede traer más

Español 08 TAREA 20—24 de septiembre, 2010
1. lunes (para entregar el martes)
Please note that on Pages 160-161 of your textbook, we are dealing with the
verbs SALIR (to go out) and HACER (to make, or to do), both of which are
irregular only in the “yo” form, in the present tense. ¿Con quién sales los
fines de semana? means “With whom do you go out on weekends?” You might
respond, “Salgo con mi familia” or “Salgo con mis amigas” or “Salgo con mis
amigos (o mis cuates).” To tell where you go, use a (to) and then either an
infinitive (“Salgo a comer,” “Salgo a jugar”) or give a place name, followed
by “para” (in order to..) and then an infinitive (“Salgo al centro comercial
con mi familia, para comprar varias cosas.) Please write ten interesting
sentences, telling us when you and your friends and family members go out,
with whom you go, what you do when you go out, and how frequently you do it.
2. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
Please write ten grammatically-accurate sentences which tell us which
household chores you and your family members do around the house. Please use
the vocabulary distributed today in class, along with the structure found on
Page 165 of your textbook. Please remember to conjugate the verbs if you are
using them as the chief verbs in your sentences (“Yo pongo la mesa todas las
noches, para ayudar a mi familia”). EXAMPLE: Mi hermanita lava los platos
después de la cena casi todas las noches.
3. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
We all know that there are things we enjoy doing, and also things which we
really ought to do. Using the verb DEBER (meaning should, or ought to),
please write ten sentences telling about what you, your family members, and
your pals do each day, but what you really should do to be of real help to
your family. EXAMPLE: Yo miro televisión y como papitas todo el día los
sábados, pero debo lavar el carro. Mi hermana baila el mambo todas las
noches, pero debe pasar la aspiradora para ayudar a nuestra mamá.
4. jueves (para entregar el viernes)
Please make believe that you have a pal, a sibling, or a cousin who is
slothful and quite reluctant to assist with household tasks. This poor
attitude is causing distress for the person’s family. Please write an email
message or a letter, consisting of a minimum of ten sentences, in which you
tell this person what he or she ought to do around the house, to help the
family maintain a well-run household. EXAMPLE: Querida Pliquéstera: Mira,
tú debes lavar la ropa para ayudar a tu familia. No debes mirar televisión
todo el tiempo, pero debes planchar la ropa de vez en cuando.

Español 08 Tarea 13—17 de septiembre, 2010
1. lunes (para entregar el martes)
Please select any six (6) people with whom you are acquainted, making certain
that 3 are feminine and 3 are masculine. Please write two sentences (minimum)
describing each of these individuals. One sentence should be a physical
description, and the other should describe personality traits or other
salient characteristics. Please omit such hackneyed vocabulary as “alto”
and “atlético.” Many of our fine students are struggling with noun/adjective
agreement, which is a major reason for this assignment. Students who have
long since mastered this skill should stretch themselves and do the
assignment more ambitiously, with complex sentences and sophisticated
vocabulary.
2. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
Please think about what your parents, grandparents, godparents, aunts and
uncles, siblings, and pals like to do at home. Please use the verb GUSTAR
accurately, coupled with the possessive adjectives, to write ten sentences –
using both plural and singular subjects – telling us what ten different
groups and individuals like to do in their own homes. EXAMPLE: A mis
padrinos les gusta leer novelas en su casa, por la noche. A Frasquita le
gusta escuchar música y comer cerezas en su cuarto todas las tardes.
3. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
Tomorrow, Thursday, we shall have a delightful quiz which covers the material
in Ven conmigo (Chapter 6, Primer Paso, Segundo Paso) which we have studied
since the beginning of the school term. You should be able to display
knowledge of noun/adjective agreement, new vocabulary relating to family
members, the proper use of the verb GUSTAR, and the possessive adjectives
(My, Your, Her, His, Our, Their, etc.). Please study your corrected homeroom
and be prepared to do a splendid job on this fine, brief quiz.
4. jueves (para entregar el viernes)
Please think about our brief study, one week ago, of the “personal a” in
Spanish. You did homework which revealed some uncertainty with regard to
this “non-translatable a.” Please write ten outstanding sentences, using
the “personal a” in a variety of creative ways. Example: Mis primos y yo
visitamos a nuestros abuelitos los fines de semana. Ofelia saluda a sus
profesores todo el tiempo. Su madrina ayuda mucho a Teresa. Papá castiga a
Memo cuando es desobediente. Yo quiero conocer a la tía de Nora. Tú nunca
escuchas a tu bolsista.

Español 08 Tarea 7—10 de septiembre, 2010
1. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
Please consider the question, ¿Qué haces con tu familia los fines de semana?
We all enjoy doing things with our families on weekends. Our friends
sometimes engage in different sorts of activities with their own families.
Reflecting on all these practices, please write a minimum of ten sentences,
in which you tell us about things you sometimes do with your family on
Saturdays and Sundays….and things which your friends do with their families
on weekends, too. Please stretch yourselves and use a lot of appropriate
vocabulary. EXAMPLE: Muchas veces, yo salgo a cenar en un restaurante con mi
familia los sábados. Elena monta en bicicleta con su familia los fines de
semana, cuando hace buen tiempo.
2. miércoles (para entregar el viernes)
One of the most challenging concepts for students of Spanish to grasp is that
of the “Personal A.” In Spanish, when we visit a person….see a person….help
a person….respect a person…or even know a person, we must place the “personal
A” before that person’s name. Hence, “I help Mom” is “Ayudo a mamá.” “I see
Ms. Spedaliere” is “Yo veo a la Srta. Spedaliere.” “I respect Mr. Acosta”
is “Yo respeto al Sr. Acosta.” Please write ten original sentences in which
you correctly use the “personal A” in front of the name of the person who is
the object of the action in the sentence. EXAMPLE: Mis hermanos y yo
visitamos a nuestros abuelitos los fines de semana. ¿Conoces a Emeterio
Berlanga? Tú ayudas a tu mamá con la cena, ¿verdad?

Español 08 Tarea 30 de agosto—3 de septiembre, 2010
1. lunes (para entregar el martes)
The homework for this evening is to politely ask your parents to read the
welcoming booklet given to you in class today. After doing so, please ask
them to tear off the back page, fill it out, and sign it. You will return
that back page. The rest of the packet is for your parents, and should be
kept at home. We do not want it back at school. Thank you.
2. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
There is no additional homework, other than to please bring in the signed and
filled-out parent form, in the event you did not do so yesterday, and the
signed book contract. Please cover your book, and obtain a 1.5” binder with
five dividers for Spanish class.
3. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
Please select any family members you wish – and remember that extended family
is always included in Latin American cultures – and write ten sentences in
which you describe these people to us. I would suggest selecting five
different family members and writing two sentences about each. Please
remember that feminine nouns must be modified by feminine adjectives, and
masculine nouns must be modified by masculine adjectives. Please be cautious
with singular and plural forms as well. Please consider both physical
characteristics and personality traits as you write your descriptions. You
may include people who are “like family” to you, as well as actual family
members. EXAMPLE: Mi madrina es muy bonita, delgada, y cariñosa. Tiene los
ojos verdes y es canosa. Mi hermanito es inquieto y travieso, pero es buena
persona. Es bajo, rubio, y tiene los ojos azules.
4. jueves (para entregar el viernes)
Please study the Nota Gramatical on Page 154 of your textbook, having to do
with possessive adjectives. Having done so, please write ten sentences which
clearly use MI(S), TU(S), SU(S), NUESTRO(S/NUESTRA(S) and SU(S) to describe
things belonging to your family members. Please be certain to phrase your
sentences so that it is clear that you understand how to use the possessive
adjectives. EXAMPLE: Mi amiga está en su casa esta tarde, hablando con su
mamá. Nuestro perro es grande y feroz, y cuida la casa para nosotros.
¡Bienvenidos al año escolar 2010—2011!

The verb SENTIRSE (ie) is reflexive. It refers to the state of one’s physical
or emotional health. Hence, the phrase “No me siento bien,” meaning “I don’t
feel well,” can refer to physical ailments or to one’s momentary state of
mind. The verb DOLER (ue) is a stem-changer used with indirect object
pronouns to explain what hurts or causes us pain. Thus, “No me siento bien.
Me duelen las cejas” means “I don’t feel well. My eyebrows hurt.” Please
write ten sentences in which you tell us about ten different people who don’t
feel well, and what hurts them – or, if you like, tell us what they need to
do to feel better. “Filomena no se siente bien. Le duelen las rodillas.
Necesita estirarse.”
2. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
Stress can be a dreadful part of life if it is excessive. Please write a list
of commands (informal) to another 8th grader to help that person manage

3. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)

Please think about the various things which occurred during your 8th grade
year at Middlesex. After you have brought to mind a number of events you
believe you’ll remember throughout the future, please write a composition in
the preterit mode, telling us about everything memorable which occurred this
year. Obviously, you must write in the preterit tense, remembering your
accents on the last vowel – except with irregular preterit verbs. Please try
to include direct and indirect object pronouns wherever possible.
2. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
Please make believe that everyone in your class has a pen-pal in 7th grade
who will be in this Spanish class next year!!! You want your pen-pal to have
a great experience in this class, so you must write a letter to him/her with
lots of good advice. The way to give advice is to use the command form
(mandatos). Please write a letter consisting of at least ten sentences or
more, advising your 7th grade pen-pal and telling this person what to do to
meet with success in 8th grade Spanish. The more conscientiously you do all
homework assignments, the better-prepared you will be for all assessments.

etc. to help with your composition. Gracias.

please do not try to be amusing, as this is not a comedy act and the focus
should remain on trying to replicate a real-life shopping trip; please use as

should remain on trying to replicate a real-life shopping trip; please use as
much vocabulary from this unit as you possibly can, stepping away from your
comfort area and employing new words and concepts you have learned during the
past few weeks. Your group will present in class tomorrow.

ESPAÑOL 08 Tarea 25—29 de enero, 2010
1. lunes (para entregar el martes)
Please make believe that you are having dinner in a fine Latin American
restaurant. You are dining with a friend whose tastes in food and in
restaurants differ considerably from yours. Please write a script, in the
form of a play, in which a waiter or waitress interacts with you and your
friend. Everything you order is not what your friend likes, so he or she
orders something completely different. Please use the vocabulary in your
binders and your textbook in order to do this assignment. EXAMPLE:
Camarero: ¿Qué les puedo traer?
Yo: ¿Me puede traer el gallo pinto, por favor?
Amiga: ¡Ay, no! A mí no me gusta eso para nada. Yo prefiero la parrillada.
Me encanta la carne asada.
2. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
Please write ten large numbers, over one thousand --- and then, next to each
number, please write out the words which equal that number. EXAMPLE:
3.711 = tres mil, setecientos once. 494.582 = cuatrocientos noventa y
cuatro mil, quinientos ochenta y dos. Please use your textbook and your
notes.
3. jueves (para entregar el martes)
Please look at the verb DESEAR (to wish), which is frequently used by polite
waiters and waitresses in fine restaurants. It is a regular verb, conjugated
quite normally. It may be used to express food orders (Do you wish some
raspberry sherbet for dessert?) or with an infinitive, to express a desire to
do something. (Deseo salir de aquí = I wish to leave). Please write ten
sentences with the verb DESEAR, to help you familiarize yourself with the
verb for your restaurant scenes connected to the Chapter 8 project.
4. jueves (para entregar el viernes)
Please give some thought to the “small talk” you will use in the restaurant
scene we are doing in class. It is certainly not sufficient to ask ¿Cómo
estás? repeatedly. Please write a scene which consists of at least ten
sentences – and write it in the form of a play – in which you and a friend
engage in small talk in a restaurant, while waiting for your food to arrive.
EXAMPLE:
Yo: Pues, ¿Qué te parece el restaurant?
Filomena: A mí me encanta el ambiente. El cocinero es extraordinario. Voy a
pedir las ostras fritas.
Yo: Buena decisión. Parece que mucha gente está comiendo mariscos.

1. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
Please practice your poem, which must be presented on Thursday. In addition………
please make believe you are going out to lunch with a friend. The waitress or
waiter greets you both at the door, welcoming you (Bienvenidos or
Bienvenidas) and asking you to step in (Pasen ustedes). You sit with your
friend and ask each other what you’re going to order. The waiter then comes
and asks what he may bring you. You order politely. Please write this little
scene in the form of a play.
2. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
Please very carefully and conscientiously practice reciting your poem, which
must be presented in class tomorrow in its entirety. It cannot be rattled off
like a grocery list. It must be delivered expressively, to convey meaning. I
recommend practicing in front of your friends and family. Tomorrow is the big
day.
3. jueves (para entregar el viernes)
Please think about finishing a fine meal in a restaurant where everyone
speaks Spanish. The waiter asks whether you wish anything more. You and your
friend decide to order a rich dessert. Please remember that in Panamá and
other Spanish-speaking countries, they do not bring the check unless you ask
for it. Please use the Así se dice section on Page 218 to write a short
script, in the form of a play, in which a waiter asks whether you wish more,
you order dessert, you express your opinions about the dessert, you ask for
the check, you ask whether the tip is included (it sometimes is, in Latin
American cities), and you pay and depart. Please use your vocabulary sheets
and your textbook to do this job conscientiously. The finished product should
be as long as it needs to be, in order to cover all the required vocabulary.

There’s a lot of worthwhile food-related vocabulary in Chapter 8 of your
textbook. Please write ten good, original sentences in which you use at least
twenty (20) food vocabulary words. Please underline the food vocabulary, so
that you know you have used the correct number. EXAMPLE: Yo tomo huevos con
tocino y leche para el desayuno, pero los niños de Darién toman hojaldras,
salchichas, y chocolate calentado. A mí me encantan las toronjas, las
naranjas, y las piñas, pero mi hermana prefiere las cerezas.
2. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
There are stem-changing verbs in Spanish which switch the O to UE. Almorzar,
poder, volver (to return), recordar (to remember), and dormir (to sleep) are
a few of them. Please write ten sentences using O>UE stem-changers,
remembering that the nosotros, vosotros, and vos forms do not change the
stem. EXAMPLE: Yo almuerzo con mis amigos en el comedor a las 12:00, y
siempre almorzamos juntos. Mi hermana no puede ir al parque porque tiene
mucha tarea.
3. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
Please think about the many differences which exist between Darien,
Connecticut, and Darién, Panamá. We do not celebrate holidays in exactly the
same way. We eat different foods at times. We may dress differently. We may
use different forms of transportation. The climate and topography may be
different. Please write ten sentences which compare and contrast different
aspects of life in the two Dariens. EXAMPLE: Yo recibo un montón de regalitos
en diciembre, pero los niños de Darién reciben pocos. Yo como los perros
calientes falsos del comedor MMS, pero los darienitas comen carimañolas.

you lunch on weekends? Where, when, and with whom do your family members
lunch? Where do you and your pals lunch at school. Remember that our school
lunch-room is el comedor, and not a coffee shop (cafeteria). Example: Mi
mamá almuerza con su bolsista en un restaurante muy lindo en Stamford.
3. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)

setting on a table, labeling all of the following: a) el mantel

tasted some of the Latin American foods we are learning about, please imagine

verbs in the E>IE category. With your conjugating sheet in front of you,
please write ten sentences involving as many stem-changing verbs as you can
possibly incorporate. EXAMPLE: Tú quieres ir al circo este sábado, pero
nosotros preferimos ir al rodeo mexicano. Mi hermana empieza a hacer su tarea
a las 6:00, pero yo comienzo a trabajar a las 7:00.
2. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
Please use the stem-changing verb VENIR to write ten well-constructed
sentences in an appropriate manner. Please remember that the first-person
singular form of the verb is Vengo (just as TENER is conjugated in the first

visitarnos en noviembre. Venimos al colegio con una sonrisa, porque nos
encanta aprender con nuestros amigos.
3. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
The verb PENSAR, when it is not followed by “que” but, rather, by an

primos el sábado means “I plan to go to the zoo with my cousins on Saturday.”
Please write ten sentences – which can include questions – telling what you,
your family members, and your pals plan to do in the near future...or asking
others about their own plans. EXAMPLE: ¿Qué piensas hacer este fin de
semana? Mis hermanos y yo pensamos ver el Espectáculo 3 aquí en el colegio
la semana que viene. Mi mamá piensa preparar arroz con pollo mañana.
4. jueves (para entregar el viernes)
It is extremely important to practice and use the IR+A+INFINITIVE
construction, to express what one is “going to do” in the near future. Please
write ten good, carefully-worded sentences using IR+A+INFINITIVE to tell us
what you, your family members, and your pals are going to do soon…..and not
where you are going. EXAMPLE: Yo voy a montar en bicicleta esta tarde,
después de hacer la tarea. Mi hermanito va a luchar con sus cuates, como
siempre. Mis abuelitos van a bailar el mambo esta noche, porque hay una
fiesta en la casa de sus amigos. Yo no voy a regresar esta noche.

appropriate vocabulary – to create your own telephone conversation.
2, martes (para entregar el miércoles)
Please use ¿Te gustaría? Si, me gustaría. ¿Les gustaría? and Sí, nos
gustaría to write ten inviting questions and ten accepting responses. You are
inviting a friend or classmate – or a group of friends – to go somewhere or
to do something. For each invitation, there must be an appropriate response.
Please use Page 184 in your textbook to guide your invitations and
responses. EXAMPLE: ¿Te gustaría ir al circo con nosotros el sábado? Sí, me
gustaría mucho ir con ustedes. ¿A qué hora nos vamos?
3. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
Please be very cautious with your spelling as you write ten sentences
(including questions, if you like) using the verb QUERER, as outlined on Page
185 of your textbook. EXAMPLE: Amigos, ¿quieren ir conmigo al cine el
viernes? Mis hermanos no quieren hacer la tarea, pero es necesario. ¿Qué
quieres hacer esta tarde, a las cuatro?
4. jueves (para entregar en viernes)
Please study the stem-changing verbs in the E>IE category, such as QUERER,
and use the verbs PREFERIR (to prefer), EMPEZAR (to begin), COMENZAR (to
start), VENIR (to come)(*Yo vengo), and CERRAR (to close or shut) to write
ten good sentences – paying careful attention to spelling and accurate
conjugation – with all the aforementioned verbs. EXAMPLE: Tú vienes a mi

Please make believe that you are going to spend a week with relatives in
another community. You have a younger brother or sister at home – or, if not,
you have a younger cousin who will be staying in your house while you are
gone. You are generating a list of things which your young sibling or cousin
must do while you are away. Please write to this individual and list, with
bullets, a minimum of ten things he or she must do in your absence. Please
use the positive, informal commands (mandatos). EXAMPLE: Querido Memo:
Oye, esto es lo que tienes que hacer esta semana -- Limpia tu cuarto.
Ayúdale a mamá con la cena. Obedece a mamá y papá. Dale de comer al perro….
2. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
Please use all the informal, positive irregular commands to write ten
sentences, telling a friend or sibling what to do --- and please include
appropriate responses, as found on Page 268 of your textbook. EXAMPLE: Oye,
haz la tarea de una vez, y luego podemos jugar al béisbol. Está bien. Pon
la mesa para ayudarle a mamá, ¿quieres? De acuerdo.

Español 08 Tarea 30 marzo—3 abril 2009
1. lunes (para entregar el martes)
Please make believe that a big party is being given in your home this
evening. Your friends have come to help you and your family to get things
ready for the wonderful party tonight. Using the yo, él/ella, nosotros, and
ellos forms of the present progressive mode, please write five sentences
telling us what is being done earlier in the day to prepare for the
event….and five sentences telling us what is taking place right now, at the
party. EXAMPLE: Pascual y yo estamos colgando las decoraciones para la
fiesta. Mis amigos están bailando y charlando.
2. martes (para entregar el miércoles)
Tomorrow, we shall have a pleasant quiz on the Primer Paso of Chapter 10,
covering the present progressive mode and associated vocabulary from the
first section of the chapter. To prepare for this event, please write ten
good sentences in the progressive which tell us what you are doing to
celebrate ten different holidays or festivals. We realize that most 8th
graders are totally captivated by their own birthdays, but these are not
holidays or widespread celebrations, so please stay with what is found on the
sheets in your binder. EXAMPLE: Para el Día de las Madres, estoy comprando
rosas para mi mamá. Para el Día de Acción de Gracias, mis hermanitos están
comiendo pavo.
3. miércoles (para entregar el jueves)
Please examine the ways to cheerfully ask for help, found in the “Así se
dice” section on Page 266 of your textbook. Please write ten pleasant
requests, followed by ten brief responses from your pals or siblings.
EXAMPLE: ¿Me haces el favor de secar los platos, Ramón? Cómo no.
¿Me pasas el jugo de guanábana? ¡Con todo gusto!
4. jueves (para entregar el viernes)
Please use the imperative mode to write ten sentences in which you tell a pal
or a younger brother or sister to do something for you. Unlike the requests
we wrote yesterday, you are now telling someone to do something. Please use
chapter vocabulary, regarding parties and celebrations, to frame your
sentences. EXAMPLE: Dame esos globos, por favor. Llámale a Filomena, y dile
que la fiesta empieza a las siete. Limpia la cocina, por favor, porque está
muy sucia.
