In reading, we are participating in the new America's Choice
Reading Program
in our
Guided Reading groups. Each group will be reading literature at their
level, practicing the skills of questioning for meaning,
summarizing, making connections, vocabulary using context clues,
and discussion groups. This new program offers a wide variety of
high interest
books of many genres. We have begun our unit on poetry. We will be reading, writing, responding to, and discussing
many different types of poetry.
Your children practice the Writing Process during the poetry unit, to improve and
hone their writing skills. We will continue Expository Writing using the Empowering
Writer's program, as well as, poetry writing.
News Reporting has begun and we are doing a great job! Parents are welcome to come and watch!
In Math, Unit 9 will be more intense practice with fractions,
decimals, and percents. In Social Studies we are continuing our unit on Colonial America and how our
country got started. We will be studying the American Revolution to culminate the year.
Our last Science unit is land and water. We will investigate the properties of soil and
the effects of erosion on the land. We actually create a landform box for this unit.
We do daily word work which
includes vocabulary, spelling, parts of speech, punctuation and capitalization,
and context clues for word meaning.
