WELCOME BACK:
Wed.,9/6/11, D2:
1. Be sure you have completed all of your summer reading. Regarding the
Manchester book, appointments for your interview have commenced. Be ready.
2. In order to assist you in understanding the fundamentals of medieval
society, I have included a link to an original source document I'd like you
to read: "The Rule of Saint Augustine" and some biographical notes about
Augustine.
There will be a lecture on the development of "duality" in Western culture
with parallel structural hierarchies in the Church and the State, the
Ecclesiastical and the Secular. This early work by Augustine of Hippo (354-
430) illustrates the strong impact he had on Western thought over the next
1,000 years. He wrote two major works you should remember:
Confessions
The City of God
Augustine's ideas are crucial to Christian doctrine and even to the
beginnings of the Protestant Reformation. He attempts to reconcile
classical Platonic philosophy with the new Christian religion. This Western
attempt to reconcile reason and faith continues to the present day.
