The Orange Avenue art room is a choice-based learning environment. What is
choice-based learning? Choice Based art education is a fancy way of saying
something very simple; students are artists and our classroom is their studio.
At the beginning of each class time students gather for a demonstration or
mini-lesson about a technique, material, or art history topic.
Then students spread out to the various studio centers and get to work. They
choose their project and materials and work at their own pace. As they work,
the teacher is able to move around the room, assisting, suggesting and helping
the artists connect their work back to the state standards. This complete
individuality allows students of all abilities and needs to work and learn
together. Students who are offered the chance to explore their own ideas find
greater meaning and relevance in their own work. At the end of class students
gather again to reflect on the day’s work and share discoveries made.
