Some of you may be wondering what exactly it is that your child is doing
while at school... Here is a brief overview of what a day in Room 27 looks
like!
Fine Motor activities require children to manipulate smaller objects in
order to increase their manual dexterity. Some of these activities include
stringing beads, completing puzzles, and putting together the class'
favorite toy, the marble run.
Circle Time is when the majority of teacher directed learning takes place.
During circle we work on concrete skills such as body awareness, colors,
numbers, counting shapes, and animals. Following directions and attending
are also practiced during circle time. Depending on your childs' age we may
also be working on phonemic awareness, sorting, classifying, calendar, and
weather. I try very hard to differentiate the instruction through out the
day. This is especially important during circle. I like to ensure that every
learner can use his or her strengths to understand the concepts that do not
come as naturally to him or her.
Gross Motor time is when we typically go out to the playground. If there is
inclement weather we sometimes have an obstacle course in the classroom or
play a game that involves the whole class. This year we have found that the
obstacle courses are especially popular. Gross motor skills include jumping,
climbing, running etc, as well as crab walking, and even wheel barrel walking.
Center time is fun time! During this time we open various
different areas to learn through play. Sometimes we also complete our art
projects during centers or have skill specific activities such as mitten
match-up (a letter match game) or counting ladybugs (a math game).
Throughout the day we also work on writing, cutting, math, language and
social skills.
