Through the Second Step Program, Kindergarten students learn and practice important skills including anger management, cooperation, respectful behavior, and problem solving. Students learn to connect emotional experiences within the classroom to scenarios in the lessons and discuss positive ways to approach conflict, violence, and relationships with others. When children understand their emotions, they are more capable of focusing on academics.
During 30 minute lessons, puppets, discussions, role-plays, and music are used to animate the learning process. The elementary program also includes a family-education component. Through parent letters, parents learn about the conflict-resolution, empathy, and emotion-management skills that their children are practicing. This helps reinforce the learning process in school and at home.
