A few important items:
• We are doing fluency drills in school to improve your
child’s reading ability. I sent home a list of 100
words that your child should be able to read quickly and
correctly. Throughout the year, they will be assessed on all how quickly and
correctly they can say all the words. Please put these words on flashcards or
print off the words on flashcards from this
website: http://www.uniqueteachingresources.com/Fry-1000-Instant-Words.html
(scroll down and click on “Fry’s Third 100 Words: Free List and Flashcards”)
to practice with your child as much as possible.
• They should also be able to spell the 100 words on the list. They
will have spelling tests on the following dates to assess their ability to
spell the words given:
11/30: List 3A and 3B words
12/21: List 3C and 3D words
1/25: List 3E and 3F words
2/22: List 3G and 3H words
3/28: List 3I and 3J words
Please have them study these words so they are prepared to spell them on the
given days.
• Please send in a box of tissues to school with your child by
Wednesday, November 23rd, as we are running low.
• The students were given the directions for their Animal Report which
is due December 19th. They should have a non-fiction book (that I must
approve) about the animal that they choose by Wednesday, November 23rd. Also,
if you go to the school website, www.stmarybethelct.org, click on my class
site and then click on “Links”, there is a “Safe Search by Google” that your
child can use to search the internet for information about their animal for
their report.
• Please have your child start reading their book for the Animal Report
over Thanksgiving break, and remember to keep track of what they are reading
on the Reading Logs which are due on Tuesdays (with at least 4 dates).
• Also, please keep practicing math facts with your child. We will be
starting multiplication after break, and we will be having timed quizzes on
multiplication facts. I will continue to give them 20 problems to complete in
1 minute. Please see your child’s homework notebook each day for the
particular multiplication facts that he or she should be studying.
