The Film Club Movie Clips
David Gilmour spends years educating his son through movies after Jesse drops
out of school. Below, you will find links to YouTube where you can watch the
various scenes from the movies that David believes contain important life
lessons for his son to know.
This is from pages 10-11, the first movie David shows his son,
Jesse. Look at the boy's expression at the end of the movie.
It's what David wants Jesse to consider.
The 400 Blows
This is a scene from On the Waterfront. David wants Jesse to
view it because the main character (played by Marlon Brando) is
experiencing a crisis of conscience: "Does he allow evil to go
unpunished, even though it's been committed by his friends? Or
does he speak up?" (28-29).
On the Waterfront
On pages 30-31, David Gilmour shows Jesse this movie because it's
about one of the greatest bands of all time. However, Jesse does
not have the same reaction to the music, or the movie, as his
father. Watch Part 4, 6:03 in to see what Jesse and David are
talking about.
A Hard Day's Night
David wants Jesse to see the way James Dean's character dismisses
businessmen who are trying to buy his ranch. The scene is so
powerful, that on page 38, Jesse asks to see the clip again.
Giant
This is the scene from page 40 when David describes how Hitchcock
lengthened the staircase.
Notorious
On page 41, David and Jesse discuss the famous "key" scene with
Ingrid Bergman.
