How can I reach you?

The FASTEST way is via email or a note in the agenda. The school voicemail is
checked once per day.

How do I set up a conference?

Conferences can be arranged for a variety of times to suit the parent's
schedule: 8:00, 9:30, 3:30. Please request them at least a day in advance. I
look forward to discussing your child's progress.

How can I participate in my child's education?

Middle schoolers are becoming more independent and may try to discourage
parent involvement. Easy ways to stay involved would include: chaperoning
trips, helping with projects, and attending school functions where student
work is displayed. Parent involvement is essential and I look forward to
forming positive partnerships with each student's parents.

Is it true that history day is not required this year?

Yes. The school is asking all students to select a topic that relates to the
theme "Conflict and Compromise in History". There will be a list of topics
provided. Students will need to make notecards listing information from
research, create an annotated bibliography, and complete a process paper. It
is up to the student and parent as to whether the
student should enter a project for competition. A student entering the actual
history day competition can select ANY topic as long as it relates to the
theme. These students will get help in addition to what is given in class and
they will earn extra credit. Visit www.nhd.org for more information on the
actual contest, theme, rules, requirements.

Will there be any field trips?

Yes. In September we are going to the St. Jones Reserve to view the
historical and scientific aspects of our local watersheds. Chaperones welcome.
The motivational trip on the last day of school is to Jungle Jim's. It will
cost 250 Buc Tickets. Parents are encouraged to take family trips to places
that enrich our curriculum since the amount of trips we can take is limited.

How can I help my child beyond the assigned work?

Take family trips to interesting and historic places that are rich in culture
or historical information. Have your child map the trip. Talk about places
you see on television and where you have been. Listen to music from other
cultures. Examine artwork from a variety of cultures. Seek out television
programs, books, speakers, etc. that offer information on culture, art,
geography, economics, and
government. Call, write or email me for a list of places and books that
relate to what we will study this year!

Is there an assigned textbook?

Textbooks are used as references in class. Our units utilize many resources.
If you would like a text to view or to keep at home until May 2008, please
let me know.
