About The Teacher

Bienvenidos. My name is Lucy Garcia Conaty and I will be the spanish teacher
for prek thru 5th grade. Most of you are allready familiar with me. My three
children will be attending St. Ann in the fall. Christian is entering 6th,
Presley is entering 4th and Oliver is entering kindergarten. I began
volunteering in Spanish at St Anns when Christian was in kindergarten and
was lucky enough to begin teaching here two years ago.
I was born in Cuba and spanish was my first language. My family was very
fortunate to be able to leave Cuba when Castro came to power and his
communist ideology became apparent. My parents made it very clear from a
young age the importance of a second language and a catholic education. I
therefore attended catholic elementary and highschool and am bilingual.

I graduated from the University of Delaware with a double major in Marketing
and Economics and did a semester of Spanish in Madrid, Spain my senior
year. Upon graduation I sold pharmaceutical drugs in Phila and N.J. for 12
years before an accident permanently changed my career path.
In 2001 after consistently being asked by parents about the Spanish I spoke
to my children I opened The Spanish Garden which was a language immersion
preschool for children ages 2-5. It was here that I discovered my passion
for dual language development and my love for teaching and interacting with
children. I am a strong proponent of early second language acquisition. Much
of the literature suggests that the earlier a second language is introduced
the better the native like pronunciation. I tell all my students that no
matter what field they choose when they graduate, having a second language
will truly set them apart from the others.
I am truly excited about teaching spanish. I am grateful for your support in
getting it increased to four days a week. I know how valuable it has been
for me in my career and I want to share that with all our children so that
perhaps if they choose, it can broaden their horizons in the future. I will
do all I can to make this a fun and interesting program. I thank you for your
support and I encourage you to be a part of your child's Spanish journey and
perhaps you too will learn a little on the way!! Muchas Gracias and please
feel free to contact me with any comments or questions.
