READING, SPELLING, VOCABULARY

READING
The focus of the 5th Grade Reading program is reading for comprehension.    In Mrs. Donovan's Reading class, we read selections from the textbook and a variety of our resources, including the Storyworks Magazine, Time For Kids, and ASK Magazine.  We read several novels together and there is a book report assigned each trimester. Assessments in reading are in a variety of formats including the comprehension test from the Reading Series, written responses to comprehension questions, classroom discussions and projects.

SPELLING

We have a weekly spelling list.  This list usually comes from the Spelling workbook and will also contain six words from the vocabulary lesson and four words from the reading lesson or from some other subject in the fifth grade curriculum.  There is a pretest on Monday and a final test on Friday.  Spelling class usually consists of games and other activities to facilitate the learning of the weeks words and vocabulary words, as well as general spelling.

The weekly spelling test is worth 35% of the final grade.  25% of the final grade comes from the student's spelling grade in written work in Reading.  Homework is worth 10% (The other 30% is Vocabulary tests.)
SPELLING HOMEWORK
Every week
Write each work three times each OR write the list of words in ABC order.
Do the three spelling worksheets that go with each unit.
This work may be done at any time during the week, but MUST be turned in on Friday before the test. No homework - no test.  If you would like to turn it in early, staple it together and put it in the Spelling Bin in the back of the room.
IF you get 100% on the pretest on Monday, you DO NOT have to do the 3X each or ABC order.  You still need to do the workbook pages.

VOCABULARY

There is a new vocabulary unit of twelve words every 2 weeks.  Six words are included in the spelling test each week.  The vocabulary tests are every other Thursday.  In addition, vocabulary lessons and homework are taken from the reading selections for the week.  These words are included in reading assessments.
