Y8 Homework

Natural Form  Homework    Year 8 Art & Design

Art homework should take about 40 minutes each week. Please complete ONE task each week.  Please stick this sheet in the back of your Design Workbook and make a note of the tasks in your homework planner each week.

1.COLLECT:  Find at least ten images of natural form and stick them neatly in your design workbook.  These could include fruit, vegtables, seed pods, shells, leaves, plants etc

2.DRAW:  Make three careful drawings from the natural form images collected for homework 1.  At least one should be a close up – zoom in and do not leave a background.  Look at shape and tone.  Use pencil.

3.  GEORGIA O’KEEFE:  Use the links on Mrs Prime’s TeacherWeb to find examples of painting inspired by natural form.  Select one example and answer the following questions:

·         Note title, date, size, media and the website you have used

·         Describe what is in the painting

·         Look at the space and composition.  Is is realistic/crowded/empty?

·         What colors has O’Keefe used?  (remember to mention which are primary, secondary and if there is complementary pairs)

·         Why did you select this particular example?  Give your personal reaction to/thoughts about the painting.  What mood do you think the artist was in when she painted it.

4.  GEORGIA O’KEEFE:  Using a full page complete a careful drawing of the O’Keefe painting you wrote about for the last homework.  If you want to, you could select a different example but remember to write down the title, date, size, media and website

5.  WILLIAM MORRIS:  Use the links on teacher web to find examples of wall paper design by this artist inspired by natural form.  Answer the same questions as homework 3.  Also identify which part of the design repeats to make a pattern.

6. DRAW:  Arrange three pieces of fruit/vegetables (or other natural forms).  Use a black pen.  Create the light and dark tones using lots of small LINES that go in one direction (HATCHING).  You may cross them to get more dark tones (CROSS HATCHING).

7. PATTERN:  This will take two pages.  Divide each page into quarters so that you have eight squares in total.  In the first square create a ‘motif’ based on a close up part of homework 3.  Then repeat it in the other squares to make a pattern.  Think about rotation as you repeat it.  Use no more than three colors to finish it.

8.  FRONT PAGE:  On the blank page you left at the start of the project, create a front page that says ‘NATURAL FORM’.  Show your understanding of the project through image and pattern.

9 Review your work and write out each of the ART words or terms below with an explaination in your own words:

Natural form, motif, observational drawing, organic shape, composition

Remember:  Please add comments by your homework identifying what you feel is successful and what you find difficult.   I will make useful comments by each homework to help you.  You can reply to these if you like.
