              MACARTHUR AWARD ESSAY

Investigate some of the 2009 MacArthur Award winners.  Choose one and provide
a paragraph summary of the person’s work and why they earned this award. 
Then, offer a paragraph of commentary or opinion.  This should not be simply
an affirmation that they merited an award.  


This assignment should be typed and turned in by Sunday, 25 October.  It
should be one-half to one page in length.



                            GILDED ERA ESSAY
Mark Twain dubbed the 1890s the “Gilded Era.”  Was this an appropriate name? 
Explain your answer,  with at least three reasons, in a 1000-word essay due
Tuesday, 27 October.
