All homework is copied off of the assignment board and should be written in
the agenda by the student each day. Please check that the homework is finished
and then sign your child's agenda every night.
Homework is very important because it reinforces the skills we have
learned in class. Please make sure your child returns homework daily.

*Read, Log, and have parent sign each and every evening.
*Write in Reading Response Journal once every 7 day cycle as assigned.
Guidelines for the journals are glued in the front
and back covers. Students have dates written in the back page of their
journal as to their assigned day and when to begin turning their
journals in beginning Day 1, September 12.**
*New Spelling unit will be introduced in school on Friday after the previous
unit's test. Students will then do DAILY spelling assignments that will
be checked each day at school through Thursday, and the unit test will
be given on Friday.** This week the test from last week's packet will be
on Wednesday, January 25.**
*New Vocabulary unit introduced on Monday, students will do assigned pages
DAILY in their green vocabulary book and the official Vocabulary Test
from the 10 new words practiced in the green enrichment book will be
given on Thursday.
*Sunshine Math HW given out on Thursday, then due back on Monday.
This assignment may need parent/family assistance :)
** Next week this is due on Wednesday when the students return to school**
*Students may be bringing home literature circle novels, analogies,
cursive or grammar to finish some of their classwork.

Families can now view each reading text story online.
Go to http://www.thinkcentral.com. To log in, students use their Success
Maker log in number which is written in the front of their agenda.
They then use their PIN number (the same one used for lunch and for media
center book check out) as their password.

The Flemming's GEMS students should now be able to view both their
reading and math books online. In reading, you would go to the Think
Central web site at www.go.hrw.com/ and use their N# and PIN number to view
the student Storytown book and workbook and for math; you would go to the
www.pearsonsuccess.net.com web site and this time the student uses their N#
for both the username and the password to view their envision math books. Let
me know how it goes...
There have been a few questions about the School-Home Connection "extra
credit opportunity" that the students bring home with each new reading
textbook story. It is mainly for you to be informed about the stories, skills
and vocabulary that your children are working on in their Storytown textbook.
The second column is for further discussion and activities that you can
discuss with your child. Just a few notes about what you did together and your
signature on the back of the paper will earn extra credit :)

How Many Different Ways
Can I Practice My Spelling Words?
#1. Sentences
Use each spelling word in a sentence, underlining the spelling word
and using at least 5 words in each sentence. May use (?, ! or .)
at the end of each sentence.
#2. 5 Times Each
Write each spelling word 5 times each and circle the one in each
group that is your best handwriting.
#3. Super Story
Use all of your spelling words in a fictional short
story. Underline each spelling word.
#4. Letter
Use your spelling words to write a letter to your friend.
Use the correct letter form with greeting, body and closing.
Underline each spelling word.
#5. Sounds the Same
After you write a new list of your spelling words, write two words
next to each one that starts with the same first two letters.
#6. ABC Order
Write your spelling words in a list, place a number by each word in
the order you will put them into ABC order, then write a second
list IN alphabetical order.
#7. Crossword Puzzle
Write clues and create a crossword puzzle for your classmate to
solve.
Need an answer key on a separate paper with the correct answers.
#8. Colorful Spelling
Use this color code to write your spelling words
with colored pencils. If the word starts with:
A-E..use a blue colored pencil
F-J..use a red colored pencil
K-O..use a green colored pencil
P-T..use an orange colored pencil
U-Z..use a purple colored pencil
#9. Synonyms/Antonyms
Choose 10 of your spelling words that you can write
a synonym for and choose a different 10 that you can
write an antonym for.
#10. Poetry
Use your spelling words in a poem,
underlining the spelling words.
#11. Parts Of Speech
Write your spelling words in a list and identify
which part of speech each word is in another
column next to the words.
#12. Smaller Words
Write your spelling words in a list, then write
smaller words found spelled correctly within
(inside) each word next to it.

BOOK REPORTS....
Ideas / Suggestions / “What You Will Be Graded On”
for Mrs. Flemming’s 3rd Grade Reading Book Reports!!
1. Fill out the book report form in pencil using your best and
neatest handwriting. Yes, neatness does count! I should not
be able to tell what you were eating when you filled it out :)
2. Explain all your written answers completely, proofread
through them, and then ask yourself “Why?” at the end of each
question you answered to see if even more is needed. There
should not be any or many empty lines.
3. Give that extra effort when choosing your project. Please
do not just choose the easiest, but one that will be different
from any you have presented before, and challenging to do.
Impress your teacher and classmates!
4. Add color and excitement to whatever you present! Stretch
your creativity! No regular lined notebook paper should be
used for the project itself. Use poster board, construction
paper, etc. Lots of color is needed for the entire class to be
able to see it. Be able to explain the steps used ( your process)
for making the project.
5. You will be handing the book report form in before you
begin your 5-10 minute presentation. You will not be “reading
your form” to us. Therefore, note cards are required to help
you remember the main points of what you want to tell us and
to answer other students’ questions. Practice your oral
presentation and use of eye contact while using these cards in
front of your family, friends, pets, or the mirror. This will help
you to be more relaxed when actually in front of the class.
6. Be a respectful listener and listen to others as you wish for
them to listen to you. You will be taking notes on all the other
students’ presentations.
7. Use that louder “playground voice” to be heard across
the classroom. This is your chance to talk loudly in the
classroom without getting into trouble! Don’t forget to look at
us and SMILE :)

BOOK REPORT PROJECTS...
All projects should be on large paper and use lots of color!
Needs to be a project not used/presented so far in 2nd or 3rd
grade.
1. Make a 3-D puppet based on a character in the story.
2. Draw and explain a map based on the story.
3. Prepare a summary version of the book to read to a younger
student.
4. Construct a mobile of the story’s characters.
5. Build a model of your favorite part of the story.
6. Write and illustrate a poem about the story.
7. Write a letter to the author explaining why you liked the
book....
8. Write an advertisement to publish in a newspaper about the
book.
9. Rewrite part of the book into play format.
10. Make a transparencies presentation to use with the overhead
projector.
11. Write and illustrate a comic strip about the book.
12. Design a new book cover for the book, writing and illustrating
on both the inside and outside .
13. Make a “sandwich board” large poster to wear!
14. Make an “archaeological dig” in a box to represent the book.
15. Make a book scene collage using magazines, catalog pictures.
16. Make a treasure hunt providing clues and treasures to find from
the book.
17. Make an illustrated time line showing the sequence of events in
the book.
18. Paint life size characters and descriptions from the book.
19. Construct a table top model of the settings and characters.
20. Rewrite a part of the book as a TV drama / ”soap opera”.
21. Write and show us a television commercial advertising the book.
22. Write and read a radio commercial advertising the book.
23. Write a letter to the class as a character in the book in
his/her point of view.
24. Make illustrated bookmarks containing book information to pass
out to the class.
25. Dress up in a costume you “invented” as a character in the book.
26. Write another chapter/ending to the book.
27. Prepare a scroll showing the sequence of events in the book.
28. Compare/contrast and illustrate two book characters.
29. Make a board game using book information.
30. Write a diary that one of the book characters may have written.
31. Design and laminate place-mats using book information.
32. Make a video of favorite part of the story.
33. Interview a book character using audio tape or class
presentation.

as you tell about the story.
